Tumblr. Pure effervescent enrichment. Old internet energy. Home of the Reblogs. All the art you never knew you needed. All the fandoms you could wish for. Enough memes to knock out a moderately-sized mammal. Add to it or simply scroll through and soak it up.

Oh, and influencers? Don’t even go here. Every video you find, every quote you reblog, every tag you curate, every waterfall GIF you secretly gaze at in wonder—that’s all you. You’re the explorer. We’re just a map you all keep on making. Welcome home. Welcome to weird. Make it yours.

Now picture all of the above, but on the go. That’s what this is.

Chances are if you’ve seen it elsewhere, it probably started here. That text post explaining the exquisite specifics of something you never realized you needed to know. That digital painting you can’t stop thinking about. Tumblr is the home of all things weird and wonderful, funny and fascinating—old-school internet vibes. We’re built a little different, just like everyone else who goes here.

Your dashboard will become the place to see what you want to see: a chronological tapestry of all the wonderful, nonsensical, fantastical things you like. Whether you post, lurk in likes, reblog and add your own take, this is your universe to discover, express, and enjoy. Whatever your community, you’ll find a ready-made home here.

When you have something to say—a hot take on the finer points of a Virgo moon, an image of your turtle Harold that you simply *have* to share with the world, F1 fanfic that your mutuals need to see—you have so many options. Shoot your shot with a photo, a video, or a text post. You can make an audio post of your ramblings or share your current favorite song via Spotify. We even have a pre-set chat post for all your incorrect quotes. Don’t say we don’t spoil you!

The reblog starts conversations in which anyone can join. Reblogging creates jokes and continues them—sometimes across the world and over the years. Whatever you choose to send into our effervescent digital ether, know that it can, and will, go anywhere. (Unless, of course, you use our post-level reblog controls. Private blog? Private post only for a couple of your friends to engage with? All possible here). No matter who you are, where you are, or what you are (looking at you here, Pikaman), this is your space—with as much freedom or privacy as you need.

Tumblr is the home of fandom. Maybe you have a favorite blorbo from your show? There’s fanart you’ll want to stare at, reblog, stare at again—or create yourself. You can read your favorite ficcers from ao3, *and* see their OC art on Tumblr, *and* discuss the finer points of lore with them. Pokémon? Got it. Marvel? Here. Kpop? Check. Supernatural? Of course. Minecraft? Ready and waiting. Star Wars? Yes! Doctor Who? You get the idea: it’s all here. Wait. Frogs. Did we mention the frogs?

It’s a whole world out here. If the prospect of reblogging, shipping, curating, and fanart feels a little daunting, or you simply require a refresher on how all this works, head over to tips.tumblr.com, where Cat Frazier of animatedtext.tumblr.com will take you through the finer points of Tumblr etiquette—the effervescent, the eeby, the deeby.

So. Sign up, follow some tags, and find your place on the dashboard. Then reblog, like, and post to your heart’s content. Or simply drift through the dream you’ve created for yourself—a chronological dashboard curated by you. For you. You hold the keys to this kingdom.

  1. Ive been having this problem for about a week now, not sure if anyone else has been experiencing it but when I’m scrolling down, it would freeze and it’ll take about a minute until I’m able to move down again or it’ll just crash one me entirely. I’ve made sure to keep the app updated, logged out then back in to see if that did anything (it didn’t help). I even restarted my phone just in case. My wifi connection is fine and works well, so I don’t really think that would be the issue.

  2. I’ve used this app for so long, it’s great, but recently I’ve found a really bad glitch that messes up your phone and could cause headaches/migraines. When I click on the link to “your 2022 year in review!” On another user’s post, tumblr will proceed to reload the dashboard (even if I clicked the link on the person’s blog) multiple times with a white screen in the middle, extremely fast. You have to delete the app and re-download it to correct the behavior, starting again if you re-click.

  3. App was amazing, but since the new update, it won’t stay on dark mode. I have sensory difficulties and am visually impared, so it’s very important for me to be able to have this. I tried changing settings, I tried closing and reopening the app, I even tried uninstalling it and reinstalling, but nothing has worked.

  4. Years later I’m updating my review to up it to five stars. It feels like the developers and staff are more in touch with the userbase and it’s needs these days, and most of the bugs I’ve had problems with in the past have been wiped out. The filtering system makes the app far more enjoyable, and I appreciate the customization settings for the dashboards color scheme as well as the feature to be able to see other people’s tags easily in notes. Thank you to the developers for your hard work.

Kinda inconsistent. Especially notifications. I’ll keep getting notifications for one like or reblog several times in a row even hours after dismissing the prompt. There’s also information missing from the app compared to the main website such as being able to see exact numbers for a Post. While it’s not a terrible experience of an app it’s one that definitely could use work.

  6. G0thicus dice:

The app isn’t too bad, but it’s not so user friendly compared to the website version. If you’re on blogs, you can’t look into their archives or find the latest posts unless you turn on their notifications. It’s also straining on the eyes and doesn’t follow your blog’s theme colors. Not so many options to do. I can see the app being used for quick things, but not as a main use. If it’s more user friendly, I’d be using it more often. Edit: You also can’t switch to other blogs so easily.

  7. Lilly D dice:

ever since the latest update, the app has been unusable. between the endless bots and the fact that the app just goes blank, crashes, or kicks me to some random post way down where i was scrolling, i’m definitely frustrated. nobody asked for livestreaming, just fix the bugs. it’s nowhere near this bad on ios, and it’s old & tired that the android app always falls short.

  8. Tumblr will rot your brain if you use it too much, so I’m not sure if I can recommend it to sane people. I actually prefer the app to the website these days, they’ve improved it a lot over the years. Some questionable design decisions, but otherwise pretty decent. Thank you for adding keyword filtering natively, I owe you my life.

  9. Moved to android from and old iOS phone so the new features are a bit wild and will take some getting use to. Overall it’s enjoyable and not that bad. I do have an issue playing videos though, the screen whites out and won’t play videos I previously could see on top of new ones. It typically happens after a few minutes of browsing.

  10. Overall fine, until the newest update. The latest update completely ruins the customizable dashboard theme, and every mode now shows as True Blue which is very high contrast and strains my eyes. I can no longer utilize dark mode or low contrast, and can’t use the app without getting a headache. I’ll be closing it down until an update manages to fix this bug.

  11. Tumblr wants you to use their app on mobile but can’t do basic functionality like actually opening the link they’re bugging you about from the browser. Ironic ads that you can’t get rid of are still annoying, as are the promoted feeds that are all over your feed no matter what you’re doing. It doesn’t even remember where you left off when you switch between screens.

  12. This app won’t work properly unless you have a fairly modern phone. Even with a modern phone, it will still have bugs; some functionality will almost always be broken. You cannot edit anything on the website that you uploaded using the app. This is mostly for drafts, queues, and posting. Update 11/29/22: Clicking on the Downloads tab crashes the app. Phone: Galaxy S20 FE 5G.

  13. The app is great right, I mean it’s Tumblr and I have been using it since 2015 but like the new updated took away dark mode and my eyes can’t handle it with the bright. I hope it’s a bug you all plan on fixing because it’s hellishly annoying especially when you still have the color palette available but it does nothing to changed the feed and the color palette only applies to blogs and searches made on the sight.

  14. The app crashes frequently and has for the last several months worth of updates. Ads are intrusive, help for the new “tip” feature pops up and interrupts interaction any time you move to a post or profile. Recommendation algorithm will completely ruin browsing based on looking at one random post once and will also pitch random “popular” stuff which makes browsing useless. Tumblr is so eager to get you to engage for analytics they ruin the experience that might keep you feeding free data.

  15. The ads are intrusive. I don’t know what happened recently but there is random music from an ad that’s not even showing when opening the app now. It’s impossible to silence because it does not appear on the screen. I cant watch any video on Tumblr because the song drowns out whatever video is playing.

  16. I love Tumblr and have used it for well over a decade. However, I recently updated the app and no matter what I do in the settings of the app and my phone, Dark mode no longer works. This is very frustrating because dark mode is my preferred way of viewing most of my apps as it’s less jarring on my eyes, especially at night. But without dark mode, I’m feeling very uninclind to use this app. Please fix this soon.

  17. It’s become useless for sharing posts outside of messages now because it refuses to let me copy posts, open discord from the app, or do anything aside from DMing it to someone through tumblr messages. You click on any of the ‘Copy’ or ‘Copy link’ options and there’s input, but the menu shuts on you without the little ‘copied’ message popping up. Unfortunately very annoying. Has been broken for weeks, please fix the bug.

  18. I love Tumblr. Ive loved it for a really, really long time. Way before the app. It’s always been my happy place and a lovely escape. There’s only one problem I seem to have. The app constantly crashes. CONSTANTLY! It crashes pretty much every single time I use it now. Usually it crashes within an hour of using it. It’s really annoying and frustrating. I wonder if anyone else has this issue… Besides that, I still love Tumblr and will continue to love and use it for as long as I can!

  19. I love tumblr, I’ve been using it for over a decade. But in the past few months it has started to randomly crash and restart which gets really frustrating and makes me not want to use it. I could even look past that, but this most recent update has ads coming up as pop ups, which then opens in browser instead of the app, also opens app store, and despite hitting back and getting back into tumblr, the app still crashes. And this is happening like once every 5 minutes. I’m over it.

  20. Britt G dice:

currently having some of the most frustrating problems i’ve ever had with the app. first, about a week ago, it kept telling me there was an update. i ignored it, till videos stopped loading. went to check for the update, there wasn’t one. cleared cache, nada. now, as of yesterday, the ads in the app are playing sounds as i scroll, when they’re not even on screen, and even over the few videos that load. worst of all: some of these ads will open popups even when they’re not on screen or touched.

  21. Tumblr is one of my favorite social media websites, because the algorithm is based on timeline rather than a freaky algorithm like Instagram’s. It’s super easy to use – though there are a few bugs, the team is always working to make the site better and more user-friendly. One thing I would like to bring up is that on the Android mobile app, you can only alter text paragraph by paragraph, which can be annoying if you want to make the same adjustment to an entire post. Hopefully, this will change!

  22. Ads are annoying, depending on the day they’re literally every 3 rd post. Can be really frustrating when half your feed is ads. Mobile app is a little slow, and can crash when looking at large gifsets or trying to load up a video or something. But it’s still a really enjoyable app, though that’s mostly because of independent users and user generated content.

  23. Pretty good app. Still a little slower than desktop but that’s fine. I am however experiencing the brand new problem. When scrolling my dashboard ads will automatically play sounds at full volume. Please do not allow ads to auto play sounds. Get your paper by all means; y’all got bills to pay and servers to upkeep. Please do not startle your user base with loud noises. Thank you 💖

  24. Jesi H. dice:

The app has continued to crash frequently after I scroll past an ad. I’ve also been experiencing loud pop up ads which open my browser but this only happened once (knock on wood it doesnt happen again.) You’re better off using tumblr on a PC or laptop browser because the app is just…in shambles. Love my mutuals and the people I follow though. Content is magnificent. The app…needs a little improvement.

  25. Alex dice:

Edit: still terrible. Newest feature is that there’s no way to jump to the newest posts; you just have to scroll all the way back to the top manually. This app is so bad. So bad. Newest problem is that whenever I enter a full screen video, when I exit I’m taken to the beginning of my feed instead of where I was. And the “now where were we” feature, which was almost helpful, has disappeared for me.

  26. App crashes literally all the time. Just closes whenever it wants to. Making a post? Better type it in a different app and copy-paste because this app can and WILL kill itself. Want to see posts on your dash more than 5 minutes old? Good luck, because the app is guaranteed to crash. No, this is not my phone’s problem; I’ve gotten new phones and same issue. Yes, I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled the app. Yes, I’ve turned my phone off and on again. Yes, I’ve tried different blogs. It’s the app.

  27. Maurie G dice:

Generally speaking, I love the app. But suddenly notifications are opening in the browser instead of the app, and notifications do not open the indicated post, instead they go to the top of my feed. I see other reviewers having the same issues. It’s very annoying and I hope it gets addressed soon.

  28. App has been cradhing too many times recently to the point of becoming unusable. At this point, I can’t even scroll through my dashboard for even a minute without the app closing on its own. I have tried: -clearing my cache -uninstaling and reinstalling -restarting my phone -multiple combinations of the above Nothing seems to work. I sent a note to the support team and am waiting to hear back. Though knowing them, that probably won’t be much help.

  29. There is a promt on the “For you” page, usually it says “More Like This” with three post options below it. No matter what, the posts one open. You can see a motion when you tap, but they do not open. I think its a cool feature to have on the app, but unfortunately my app is up to date, I opened and closed it, restarted my phone, and that function in the app is not working; no matter how you try to tap on the posts presented, nothing happens. Please look into this? ♡

  30. Zoe G dice:

whatever change you made recently sucks. Suddenly my app opens all links in a browser, and after updating it now it just loops. I hit a link for a previous post, (for a user i know works) it asks to open in the app or browser (im IN the app) and selecting app opens a NEW app, and doesnt even load the page! It loads my home feed! Edit: opening tumblr links with the app doesnt go to the page, it goes to home feed. you broke the expected behavior, making the app worthless.

  31. Tabooi dice:

Ever since the most recent update the app has become almost unusable. If I reblog a post or open notes it sends me to the top of the dash. I can’t scroll for more than two minutes without the app freezing and/or crashing. I love Tumblr so I hope y’all resolve these issues soon. I know it isn’t just me as I’ve seen numerous people complaining of the same issues.

  32. Kay dice:

Horrid. I used to use Tumblr alot a few years back and wanted to get back into it, but the app is 100% unusable. I can’t even get through signing up without it crashing and now I can’t even get the app to boot up without it crashing. I saw other reviews and thought screw it I’ll give it a shot, but it’s useless. I’ll keep it in hopes that they update and fix, but if not done soon I’ll just delete it.

  33. KAT P dice:

The app is completely unusable now due to it crashing when I try to open it. Not only that, every night I get a notification that the app is overloading my phones CPU due to the app trying to run, even thou I’ve closed/forced closed it multiple times. I haven’t touched the app in days and it’s still trying to open itself. I’ve already cleared the cache, I’ve tried connecting to a WiFi network rather then the mobile network, nothing works.

  34. Grace B. dice:

I’ll keep complaining until they fix this: the app, no matter how many updates it gets, will not let me scroll through my dashboard as much as I want to before repeating what’s at the top (i.e. the latest posts or the “You’re Caught Up” banner), and it’s very frustrating. It’s been like this for nearly two years now. It’s very upsetting and it’s disheartening that staff has never noticed or tried to fix this very frustrating glitch.

  35. I like tumblr. Despite the ups and downs, Ive been on it for a decade. But it’s really frustrating when I can’t see my messages on mobile. For at least 2 weeks I can only access them on desktop, just says it can’t load on the app no matter how many times I reload it, restart the app, etc.

  36. John (LJ) dice:

September ’22 latest update, cache has been cleared. •unable to click on post, through mutual. Have to like post, close out app. and then can click on that post/ page to transition. •If you save post in queue, then go back to mutuals timeline, it doesn’t take you back to that post, it takes you back to the start of mutuals timeline annoying. Checked all settings this is a update issue.

  37. For the most part, the app is phenomenal! Sometimes an eerie, off-screen ad will play sound every so often if I have my sound up which is disorienting… My biggest reason for 4 stars is because suddenly my dark mode stopped working on the app! Even with “force dark mode” enabled, posts on Tumblr now have the white backround instead of the black, which is Super harsh on the eyes. Not sure why it suddenly changed/stopped working, but it makes looking at the app a bit more painful.

  38. 1. Media auto play options doesnt work. You cant change it from never auto play. The taps doesnt register. 2. There is a bug where if two video post is right after eachother then the bottom post “bleeds into” the top post. 3. Why isnt there a report bot user button? There is a million bots on the platform and you can only report them for spam or tos rule breaking. 4. Add a option in settings to be able to have a extra confirmation of yes or no when reporting anything.

  39. Bee Bee dice:

I love tumblr but the mobile app doesn’t seem to work as it should. I’ve only had it for about a week and now it crashes every time I try to access my messages, reblogging doesn’t work anymore (nothing happens when I press the button) and when I tap on my profile there is an error that something went wrong every single time , so it’s basically inaccessible.

  40. Rie Robri dice:

It’s really nice especially when downloading images, the qualities are absolutely awesome. My only problem is the blue “Keep Reading” link in the app, it’s not working, I can’t read most of the blogs that I’ve been wanting to read, I have to switch to browser just so I could read them. I’m not even sure if I’m the only one having troubles with this, I uninstalled and reinstall it but it’s still not working. It’s frustrating. Please fix it.
