A waste of time & money! I never pay for apps but splurged on this to keep track of my many plants. I documented care & pics in the notes. I even reached out for help from the app experts a few times. That was the 1st year. It auto renewed & hasn’t been right since. The app keeps asking me to renew despite my CC being charged. Now several notes are missing. All that work in vain. Lost. I’m switching to index cards. Cheaper & safer. No more reliance on faulty apps & electronics.

  2. I had high hopes but sadly, this app is no more accurate than other apps but it comes with a hefty subscription fee. I’ve been testing it for the better part of a week using known and unknown plants. Picture This was making far too many mistakes to be useful to me as a horticulturist. One example of the inaccuracies is that it repeatedly identified plants with alternate leaves as a plant that has opposite leaves. I do like the way it organizes your results and provides details about the plants.

  3. Not Free! While the app says it’s free, in order to properly identify any plant, you have to buy the $35 per year subscription. Ads are incredibly invasive, and while in the middle of trying to take a photo, an ad will pop up. You then have to completely close the app to get rid of the ad that’s popped up in the middle of what you’re doing because there is no X to close the ad. It forces you to wait for the ad to finish. No. Unstalled after 5 minutes of frustration.

Very accurate. I love how much information the app gives you about each plant. Its so fun to walk about the backyard and learn about what’s back there! You can even save plants you searched for in your “garden”. Ads are kind of annoying when you’re trying to look up multiple plants, but I’d still recommend it.

  5. I did the 7 day trial during a vacation in Hawaii. Picturethis did an unbelievablely good job on plants. It guessed right first try most times, or gave good alternatives. There are so many useful features too, like the offline capture. The app is high quality, looks great and super easy to use. I’d highly recommend it. However the subscription cost is something I’m not sure I will keep long term. I will continue to use it for now, and would reactivate it as needed.

  6. I am just finishing up my free trial and I had no intention of paying to keep the app, as it seemed a bit pricy. However, I have found it so interesting and helpful that I am going to let myself be billed! On the free trial, I haven’t seen a single ad. I have used it to identify scores of plants, shrubs and weeds. It also identifies insects, birds, and trees. It is able to identify plants that are nearly dead with amazing accuracy, offering info on plant needs, problems, etc. I’m impressed!

  7. Updated review to 2 stars: App wiped out my notes for one of my plants for the third time now. What makes it worse is that lately adding pictures has been difficult, as if I try to add a picture and comment at the same time, or try to add more than one picture at a time, it gets stuck loading. Sometimes you will add pictures, and all we seem fine, but then when you click save there won’t be anything written or any pictures in the note, so you have to do it again

  8. The app works great as long as you have a cell signal in the field. It’s easy to set up but very difficult to cancel. I use this about once a year and so $3.99 monthly is just too much to pay – for me. You may find this useful more frequently and find the cost reasonable. Just be aware that cancelling is very difficult. I started to delete the app but was warned that it would not cancel my subscription.

  9. Free trial includes really obnoxious ads that you can’t close or skip. On top of that they don’t tell you up front that it costs 6$ a month. They make you download it, make an account, agree to give them your data, and then finally present you with the “free trial” (Ad Trial). It all just feels like shady business practices to boost their download counter and make a quick buck. For 6$ a month it definitely isn’t for the casual user.

  10. Plant identification, information, and illness detection works great and as expected, but the plant journaling and note features have become frustrating, difficult to keep any records of my plants. My pictures and journal entries for my plant journal keep disappearing and have troubles uploading. My text entry disappears when I try to upload a journal entry with photos. I have to go back and re-enter the text. My header pictures for my plants do not stay saved. Really hoping this will be fixed.

  11. This app is awesome! I have not stumped it yet and I have tried. Packed full of useful tips and resources to help you succeed at caring for your plants. There’s even event reminders for Watering and Fertilizing from up to once a week to 180 days and even yearly reminders for plants that don’t require much help. Great for identifying the random volunteers that pop up in your garden. I really can’t say enough good things about this app. Well worth the price.

  12. It is accurate about 98% of the time. When I think it is wrong I just retake the picture at a different angle or try to single out the plant better for the retake. It does particularly well when you get both the leaf and the flower (if there is one) in the pic.

  13. This app is amazing – quickly and correctly identifies any type of plant I have photographed. What I don’t like is the cost – it is way too expensive for what it doe and only being offered monthly billing options is frustrating. This is the kind of app where I should pay for it once and that be it, not have to pay every month. Before I realized it, I think I paid over $100 for it, and I only noticed because I cancelled a credit card. I’d be willing to pay $50 for lifetime use maybe

  14. Spent an hour trying to cancel the trial membership, which renews at the full one year rate with no refund. I’m stuck paying for a full year of the picture this insect app, so I decided to revert to paper field guides for the plant app. I was assured by a customer service rep that it is canceled, but it never did show up in my play subscriptions, so that remains to be seen in a couple of days. The app itself is good, just don’t like the deceptive way it is marketed.

  15. Wanted to give this a higher rating, but like so many others have said the levels of attempts of getting into your wallet are staggering. One has to be very careful which button you click or you will be paying! I like it’s quick and complete descriptions, history and etc are great, but … all the tomfoolery is just too much to take – I believe I’ll be moving on to other options. On the value side, there is so much information here and it is worth paying for … but not over and over!

  16. I loved this as a free app. It has now gone to a subscription model, and the price point is ridiculous. Negative reviews are in the majority about the inability to cancel that subscription, or “free trial”. It’s too bad that that the developers couldn’t place a fair one time price on their product for ad-free, and leave a limited free version as others do.

  17. So far I’ve had good luck with both the plant id feature as well as the problem id feature. However, it’s really annoying/bizarre that plants in your “collection” are not automatically in your garden. It’s not at all intuitive that the camera button on the home screen doesn’t give you the option to save plants to your garden. Particularly annoying as it’s not a free service. Improvements in these features would raise the rating.

  18. I downloaded the app over a year ago but canceled before the end of the free trial. Last week, the app charged me for the renewal of an annual subscription, but when I tried to log into the account to make sure the subscription was canceled, I had no access. It doesn’t show up on my Google Play subscriptions, but I’m still out $22. I started an email thread with customer service who attempted to talk me through “restoring” my account, but on my last response, Gmail could not complete the email due to PictureThis’ email box being full. So… no way to access my account, no way to communicate the issue, and no way to get a refund. BUYER BEWARE

  19. Originally six months ago I gave this a try, and it was very frustrating and disappointing. It was marketed as free when in fact, you were forced to pay (to use it more than once if you escaped the aggressive pop up), and it wasn’t very user friendly. They have since updated a LOT and provided a friendlier and true free experience, and updated the user interface. I’m happy to have given this another try after awhile!

  20. Hmm…tricky review. Love the concept, but not the execution or accuracy. 2 out of 5 times it works well to identify. And there are lots of helpful tips to care for a sick plant. But I purchased the app for its identification features, which is where it falls short. I realize it can’t be perfect every time, but I wish the database was more complete. And that there was a way to eliminate false hits, or receive mutiple possibilities. I will not renew my subscription if it continues like this.

  21. Great app for recognizing plants. The detailed care tips are helpful, tho I often have to look things up elsewhere to get enough info, and sometimes the info in the app is incorrect. It does have some blind spots/missing plants. The lost star is for the constant annoying popups asking me to subscribe. I would gladly pay a one time fee for advanced app features or to have more than a certain number of pics, even if it was $20 or $30, but no way am I going to pay for an (expensive) subscription.

  22. Not a fan after they moved to a subscription model. It was great while it was fully free to use, and acceptable when it was a limited # of IDs per day before you had to subscribe, but now you can’t even open it without being promoted to start the trial period. Still gets 2 stars because it’s accurate from what I can tell, but I’ll be exploring actual free options from other developers now.

  23. It was a very useful and well made app. It offers a 7 day free trial and has you enter in you credit card details. After that, there is no way in the app that I could find after digging through all the sensible places that allow you to cancel the subscription of around $22 a month. If there was an option to cancel, it would be an incredible app, but this is seems like a scam to me.

  24. One of the extremely rare and unusual to come across apps that delivers not only as it is/was expected to, but does so w/o bombarding your device with excessive ads, adware, or other hidden behind-the-scenes garbage. My reviewing is rare as I do not endorse nor keep many apps, however I have been using this sporadically for 6 months and haven’t once had an issue. It’s not 100% accurate, however has a very impressive percentage of accuracy. Much better than I expected in performance. Jan/2019

  25. Unimpressive. It gives a few options and you have to decide which is closest. Some it didn’t even give good options. Then the photo library for each plant then seems to be from others identifications, which could be correct or not. I had assumed there would be more to it for a paid app. Like input from others. It really didn’t tell me anything about which specific species I had. It couldn’t even identify an agave as an agave…..

  26. This app is very good at identifying plants. It’s very good because users like me trained it for a long time, and then the developer decided to charge an insane subscription fee to use it. It’s easily worth $10 for a premium version, but there’s no way I’m paying a monthly fee after helping train the damn thing. One star. My previous rating disappeared with no warning. Here it is again.

  27. Best app for identifying plants. It offers a free id once per day, and a “I’m feeling lucky” button for a chance to get 1 or 5 extra ids. Does a great job with correct results. You can use a photo taken from your personal camera as well, I noticed some said you can’t but you can. When you first download the app it has a pop up to buy a subscription. Simply chose the x in the right hand corner.

  28. I (intentionally) subscribed to premium, but no matter what I do the app stops responding if I try to choose a photo to identify or diagnose. It works sporadically when using the camera within the app, but that isn’t always the easiest thing to do. The information provided is helpful and the interface is well designed, it’s a shame the app is too unstable for reliable use.

  29. Tu Nguyen dice:

Potentially a good app if updates are made. I’d say its about 75% accurate. Some plants labeled wrong with the photo identification, however when I go to correct results the correct name/species doesn’t show up as a possible selection, so I end up choosing the wrong label (because you have to choose something). A little annoying. I wish there’s a way to give feedback or correct the name. I did pay for the yearly fee, so its be nice if the identification is more accurate.

  30. Love this app, even though I don’t pay, I just let the adds run to get more identifications! I really like that there are options for people who don’t want to pay to use the helpful identification features. This app is easy to use, though I didn’t realize at first that there were multiple identifications for most plants and you have to swipe to see which is the perfect match. Also, make sure the plant is not damaged or altered before you identify it, or it could match with a different species.

  31. I’ve been using this app for the Care Calendar feature to keep track of when to water & fertilize each of my houseplants. This morning I opened the app and all my plants that were stored there (along with their corresponding watering schedules) were no longer there. Completely gone. And I don’t even recall updating it recently, so no idea what happened, but this is really frustrating.

  32. App does what it’s meant to do. I have no issue with the function aspect. This app has, however, gone the way of many others, and put features behind a share wall/pay wall. It’s unfortunate because previously the app was a great way to identify plants inside and outside the home. $20/mo doesn’t make this a great investment for me, though I would consider paying a one time, non-exorbitant sum for use.

  33. This is a really great concept but unfortunately it’s just not mature enough. I am finding that I get different results for the same plants taken with excellent lighting conditions, back to back. Moreover I am getting completely incorrect results. If this app was free I wouldn’t care but for the price it has to be damned close to perfect.

  34. been using this app for close to 3 months now. does the job, inspite of a few minor bugs when adding new plants to my garden, after matching. would love to see some updates like a personal notes section for each plant to record history and issues. the option to add photos of my plant so over time would be great, so I can see it’s evolution. on the watering schedule, I’d like to be able to mark the plant watered, even if I do it ahead of schedule, I should be able to reset timer on it. thanks!

  35. Invasive “Free Trial” pop-up, and it misidentified 3 plants. Overall, a useless app that tries to trick you into a subscription. There’s no “do not want” option for the trial/subscription, you have to close the screen and there’s no indication to do that. This is the worst kind of predatory app, where they hope you’re not paying attention. And it doesn’t even do what it’s supposed to! Garbage.

  36. So far I have enjoyed this application a lot. Overall the accuracy is quite high and if it missed the target, just take another photo from a different angle or time of day and this usually fixes the incorrect ID. Some suggestions for the programmers: create more flexibility for personal editing, ways to add multiple photos of one plant, and ability ti customize the database. Well, the potential is there and you charge quite a bit, so thank you but you can give more.

  37. The app identifies pretty well, but it’s not free unless you want to watch ads all the time. I don’t mind some ads, I get it, that pays for the app. This app is frustrating tho. I’m standing in waist deep plants trying to manage my yard and have to watch ads just to identify one plant at a time. I don’t have time for that… also, if there was a tad more info, such as plant dimensions, color varieties, etc. or even external links to Google or something, I’d give it 5 stars and subscribe.

  38. The app is great. However, I’m giving it 3 stars because while it says you get a 7-day free trial, hidden in the fine print is the fact that you have to cancel 24 hours in advance of the final day to avoid being charged. I definitely should have checked into this more, but the company could have been more up front about the policy, since typically you get charged for things if you cancel *after* the free trial actually ends, not before.

  39. Z dice:

Seemed like a good app so I tried the ‘free’ trial for 6 days. I found some misidentifications between walnut and hickory and feel it should recognize these since there is unique differences in the leaf/branch structure. It also sees mature growth as one species and new growth as an entirely different species. To top it off ‘they’ want complete access to every bit of your business which they don’t need plus they make it as difficult as possible to unsubscribe. I’ll look for something else.

  40. H Seeger dice:

I love this app….perfect in almost every way. Easily identifies my plants and gives me tons of great info about them. Only one complaint….although there are watering reminders, you have to open the app to see them. I wish I would just get notifications on my phone when it’s time to water. Having to remember to look at the app every few days to remember when to water defeats the purpose of reminders anyways. Otherwise, fantastic app!!
