Threema is the world’s best-selling secure messenger and keeps your data out of the hands of hackers, corporations, and governments. The service can be used completely anonymously. Threema is open source, allows to make end-to-end encrypted voice and video calls, and offers every feature one would expect from a state-of-the-art instant messenger. With Threema Web, you can also use Threema from your Desktop.

PRIVACY AND ANONYMITY
Threema is designed from the ground up to generate as little data on servers as possible. Group memberships and contact lists are managed on your device only and never stored on our servers. Messages are immediately deleted after they have been delivered. Local files are stored encrypted on your mobile phone or tablet. All this effectively prevents the collection and misuse of your personal information, including metadata. Threema is fully compliant with the European privacy legislation (GDPR).

HIGHEST ENCRYPTION STRENGTH
Threema end-to-end encrypts all your communication including messages, voice and video calls, group chats, files and even status messages. Only the intended recipient, and nobody else, can read your messages. Threema uses the trusted open source NaCl cryptography library for encryption. The encryption keys are generated and safely stored on users’ devices to prevent backdoor access or copies.

COMPREHENSIVE FEATURES
Threema is not only an encrypted and private messenger but also versatile and feature-rich.

• Write text and send voice messages
• Make voice and video calls
• Share videos pictures and locations
• Send any type of file (pdf animated gif, mp3, doc, zip, etc.)

SERVERS IN SWITZERLAND

OPEN SOURCE AND AUDITS
The source code of the Threema app is open for everyone to review. On top of that, renowned experts are regularly commissioned to conduct systematic security audits of Threema’s code.

  1. My wife and I use this exclusively and have peace of mind. She’s on iPhone too so it’s nice to have all the read receipts and better quality videos that you can’t send over text. The one downside that doesn’t actually have to do with the app itself, but comes up when using it is that the audio on a phone call starts dropping out when losing service, where a regular phone call would still work just fine. Buy it and force all your family and friends to use it. It’s awesome.

Can’t recommend this enough. The only thing it’s missing is self destructing messages, but that’s not really as reliable as you might think. You should always be careful of the things you send no matter what and that you full trust the person on the other end. If you care about your security and still want group texts, then Theema is the absolute best messaging app for you. Not having to tie your phone number or email to your account is a huge plus for me, while for some people it’s nice to be able to see all of your pre-existing contacts (which you can still totally do if you want) I prefer not to just have people be able to find me like that. I had some of my friends downloaded it (I even paid for some of them to get it, because it’s that good) and walked them through skipping adding their phone number and email, had them add a master password (which you have to enter when you turn your phone on; optional) and PIN. You can set the PIN for individual chats. I have one group with 10 people who exchange books with each other. There are polls, now there’s video chat to compliment the phone calls, you can transfer your account between phones, there’s a web client, the servers are in Switzerland, end-to-end encryption by default, you can verify and add your contacts phones by scanning their QR code to avoid “man in the middle” attacks, and best of all you can just totally ditch your account; delete everything and start over whenever you want with a new anonymous ID. Seriously, I cannot stress it enough, if you genuinely care about security you need to buy this app and get your contacts to but it. Sure you can get Signal, which is tied to your phone number (not to mention gets part of its funding from the State Department and has a broken desktop app that stores everything in plain texts files) or WhatsApp (which is owned by Facebook and probably collects your data to sell you garbage) for free, but your paying for the real thing when you get Threema.

  3. Consistently exceeds expectations! I have used Threema for years and, if they had stayed with the earliest versions of the app, I’d still purchase it! In addition to the encryption and security, they have continually added features that aren’t seen elsewhere with the encryption and security Threema provides. If someone with whom I regularly communicate does not already have it, I purchase it for them. For everything Threema provides, especially at the price, it’s ludicrous to not have it!

  4. Its a very good app especially if you take privacy seriously, the company is completely user funded so they dont sell your data. Notifications are pushed so you dont need to check regularly. You can make phone calls.. I like that there’s no ads or any annoying features. A small feature that I like is that you can change the wallpaper for conversations with specific people.

Like it but it’s very glitchy. Messages sometimes take a while to send but I get the icons so I’m not guessing if it did or not. The video is hit or miss for instances will hang up on occasion. If you receive an incoming call or if you bluetooth disconnects. Love that it has a pin setting and not tie to phone number. Seems very dependable for keeping things secure.

  6. absolutely love that this app does not require access to my contact list and that I have an ID assigned that is unique to this app and not my phone number. only feature I wish this app had, would be the ability to set message expiration, that’s currently not available. Here’s hoping we see this in a future update. Otherwise, if you are privacy-conscious, this app is perfect.

They made a change which forces all text messages to be condensed. You have to tap a button that says “read on” which will allow you to read that one message in full. You must then condense that message again to see any other message. Would be great if this feature was made optional so we could disable and just see the full text of every message.

Great App and thumbs up for the latest update. Long distance calling (Latin America+US to Europe) is w/o comparison, just crystal clear and no drops ever, and being able to send in original quality is prime for artists. Yes, still hoping for a (retroactive? 🤯) disappearing message feature (just add it with a security disclaimer) and the ability to give messages in group chats a thumbs up/down (we’re all busy and it’d be just the right level of feedback sometimes). Keep up the good work!!

  9. I enjoy the app thus far. To the Threema response of the previous review, I will add that if one is so concerned about incidental message data storage and notification logs then perhaps one might choose to forego the risk of convenience and disable them all together. I would also add thatt there are many apps available to help mitigate pesky hidden cache/thumbnail, metadata, etc… Threema in and of itself seems to be well maintaned and of excellent quality. There isn’t anything better for $2.99

  10. Jo B dice:

It’s good with room for improvement. One big problem I see are video calls with people far away (different continent). Call doesn’t even establish, cancels, disconnects constantly or video quality is really bad. Trying the same with WhatsApp results in a good video and almost no interruption. I don’t know what compression etc. WhatsApp uses in comparison, but it is really kind of a deal breaker to use it exclusively for communication with others.

  11. Alex dice:

Appreciate your effort with Threema Libre though! I bought an extra license just for Libre! ### Update: web.threema.ch worked in the past, at least kind of. Now it’s completely broken and I just see the yellow connecting banner. I guess some developers wanted to “optimize” something that used to work nicely. Now they it us optimized and super fast (I guess but do not experience) but also super broken. ——- Just crashed and could not be restarted for 1min. Starts to remind me of MS software.

  12. even that the app isn’t free, doesn’t offer the option to select more than one text/picture within a message for deletion, so you have to delete everything one by one. all free apps I’ve used (e. g. whatsapp) do have that feature, making “cleaning up” a conversation much easier.

  13. Cannot send or receive messages have tried cintacting support online uninstall an reinstall this seemed to have haooend after sending a large work distribution group message.. anyone had this issues before an know how to fix it. It’s been 2 days now an multiple co tact made to threema support team I’ve tried every viable option known to fix the issue.. it seem to solely be my threem I’d not working made another I’d on same device an no issues at all.

  14. Love it. Highly recommended to anyone looking for a secure E2EE messenger. I think it’s much better than Signal. I moved my friends and family over, and those stubborn ones who didn’t want to pay, I bought a licensed version from the Threema Store for them 🙂 well worth the small fee!

  15. This is a must have app to keep what your saying private from anyone who monitor your txting. Signal is just now figuring that out. While threema knew what was important and that is privacy. 12/19/22 After using the app for about a few months there are hiccups when it comes to sending txt. The software will work great with 2 to 3 txt but the next txt takes forever to send. Not sure if it is a software issue

  16. The only things that I can nitpick about are: 1. No full-text search through chats. That would be especially handy to look where you said what but you forgot in which chat that was. 2. The shade of gray of the message bubbles from other people in dark mode is way too bright. I would prefer if it either was the same shade of gray as the sender’s bubble or just a tiny bit lighter. I always think I highlighted those bubbles which confuses me. If this gets fixed it’s a 5/5.

  17. Excellent. Reliable, fast, light, better call and video quality than Meet or Skype, far better experience with media than Google Messages with RCS. Only downside is that due to network effects, nobody I communicate with is willing to switch over, vastly limiting the utility of Threema for me.

  18. Great mobile app, but limited desktop version. It would be great if the desktop version had more features and were more polished. The current one is very lacking.

  19. I purchased this app and I’m having a lot of difficulties with it. I’ve tried everything too import my contacts to no avail. Baby I’m doing something incorrectly and I may need some assistance. At least it’s only $5.33, I’m seriously considering uninstalling this app and maybe stick with signal

  20. I owned many paid app….this one is the first worst app i ever use…anyone use this app for secure and stable call but this app is useful for chatting only not video call…better to choose other calling app… switching to Threema was my bad decision. Even i reported the bugs to the developer no action has been taken.. For what purpose should this app is useful evertime call drop..call disconnect.hanging on initializing….call ended while receiving call…call ended while opening video.👎👎

  21. I like the approach Threema takes to messaging. On the one hand, it has like 99% of any your “high-profile” messaging app, on the other — it has the serious uncompromized approach to security: you have end-to-end encryption and the possibility to not give away your contacts and everything else to 3rd parties. Hence I personally use Threema for “real” chats — with family members and trusted folks, and defer to “more popular” messengers for no-brainer activities like scrolling dumb memes 😉

  22. AxMi-24 dice:

Amazing app, doesn’t demand phone number, has proper backups and security, key exchange that even novices can understand. Once multi device support arrives it will be perfect.

  23. g y dice:

I get it about privacy, I totally do and privacy is what I want. But I can only contact people who also use this app, seriously ? This looks a great app I’d want to use as a messaging app, but there’s absolutely NO WAY people will change to using this app. So because of this, uninstalled…

  24. Upgraded threema is becoming much more downgrade day by day and even if mobile data and WiFi is stable messages are not going through nor it getting delivered real time lag of hours and day really very upset with the application.

  25. Love Threema Thank you so much for a messanger app that is solid connection and great video calling as well as file sharing. Best App Ever HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!!!!!!

  26. Pretty poor video quality and not the best desktop client. Cool that it has its own push service.

  27. Tee Row dice:

Notifications some don’t come through, even tho everything turned on but still best in case software.

  28. With new update it doesn’t let you switch to Bluetooth when your on a call…… so annoying…

  29. It is a very secure messaging app. If you want to be sure nobody ever gets access to your data, Threema is an excellent choice. The push notifications didn’t work on my Galaxy A8 at first, but there’s a troubleshooting page that explained how to fix it and they work now. Using multiple devices with one account is very difficult with Threema. That’s probably the biggest drawback for me.

  30. The app in general is quite good and feels secure. I’m no IT security expert so cannot really verify 😊. Unfortunately, messages and particularly images take a long time to be delivered and sometimes they don’t get delivered at all! When sending a single image, the issue only occurs rarely but when sending multiple images at the same time, the issue occurs almost always!

  31. meilla104 dice:

Efficient about crypted messages, but very unstable. Something messages need hours to be delivered and calls are a nightmare. Most of the calls don’t find the connection. When the connection is established, it always cut. Often, the app must be open to load new messages because Threema doesn’t load them. And then, the best, the support is arrogant and never accepts that an issue is encountered with Threema.

  32. This is a good app with some nice features, particularly uncompressed image sharing. A couple of things I’d suggest. Why can’t you thumb up posts in group chats? This is an essential feature for me. A quick response option, the perfect lazy solution. The other thing is the chat bubbles. Grey, grey, grey everywhere. It’s a bit bland. I prefer blue, like Signal and iMessage. Some colour options would be nice. Other than that, a decent effort indeed. Keep up the good work!

  33. I really love this app, but while sending messages in echo (I know the name echo), I hate it ping back to me. Could you provide another ways to send messages without getting ping back?

  34. Overall good, but has some annoying bugs. For example the search function is really buggy and doesn’t jump to each word that I’m looking for. I press up and down buttons but most of the time, only the number counts up and down, chat is stuck at the same place. Generally, it seems like development of this app has stalled a bit.

  35. The app looks solid, but we’re missing a couple of key functions, like reacting to messages in group chats and the ability to have a link/qr/whatever to invite other people in the chat (which can also lead them to the store to buy the app, you know) , overall nice experience, but not many people use the app because, cheap bastards and such and I would like it to be better so I can recommend it to more people. Thanks!

  36. Can not create ID….Shows too many I’d created, but I have no active ID Now Problem solved

  37. Nice communication app, good interface and great user experience

  38. Dave Daly dice:

Honestly the best IM app available. Have been using it for years. Worth every cent. Highly recommend.

  39. Need feature to call (group call) with loud speaker.

  40. Best to use for your security and privacy communications
