BLOCK TRACKERS
Tor Browser isolates each website you visit so third-party trackers and ads can’t follow you. Any cookies automatically clear when you’re done browsing.
DEFEND AGAINST SURVEILLANCE
Tor Browser prevents someone watching your connection from knowing what websites you visit. All anyone monitoring your browsing habits can see is that you’re using Tor.
RESIST FINGERPRINTING
Tor aims to make all users look the same, making it difficult for you to be fingerprinted based on your browser and device information.
MULTI-LAYERED ENCRYPTION
When you use Tor Browser for Android, your traffic is relayed and encrypted three times as it passes over the Tor network. The network is comprised of thousands of volunteer-run servers known as Tor relays. Watch this animation to learn more about how it works:
BROWSE FREELY
With Tor Browser for Android, you are free to access sites your local internet service provider may have blocked.

I am now of the opinion that one cannot use only one browser. So, I’ve installed a few to analyze them, and settle on 3. Tor was the very first and I’m impressed already. Nice appearance, easy to get up & running, great security settings, enough options for comfortably, and a bundle of add ons to customize it. So far I’m impressed and quite taken back by the efficiency with which it displays, plus the settings are at your fingertips with no articles and 20 step procedures and protocols to forget
I don’t know who to blame. first time install and first time use. for reason I don’t know as soon I open tor, the app crashs in fractions of second. you only get to see the purple screen with the green Connect button. however, if you are fast enough you can manage to press the Connect button. after which it will not crash anymore, or at least it didn’t for me.
Crashes immediately on opening. I installed the latest version of the app and, as many recent reviewers have stated, the app opens for a second and immediately crashes. It doesn’t even load a webpage. It’s like a blip on the screen and immediately crashes. Hopefully they’ll fix it soon. But for now it’s unusable (and uninstalled).
Crashes quickly after opening. As a workaround, you can try opening multiple times. It seems like sometimes tapping “connect” before it has a chance to crash will keep it open, and then it works great. Edit: Fix your app please. It’s been two months of crashing so I’m removing another star.
Recent update crashes the app. Turning off my phone screen will crash the app. And clearing the cache and reinstalling the app does not resolve the crashes. So whoever pushed this update out should be fired because it has not done anyone good now. Why fix something when it didn’t need to be fixed? That seems to be a motto that programmers need to uphold.
Crashes after the first run. I’ve used the Tor Browser before in the past few months but every single time I use it after the first time it crashes on start-up. There’s nothing I can do to fix it except for reinstalling it. The app experience wasn’t anything exceptional anyways. While I love TOR, this browser is just Firefox mobile with TOR support and a rebrand, nothing really extra. It evens nags me with notifications and wants to be my default browser.
I have been using this app for years now and loved it. I downloaded last month on different phone. It does not work. I can go where I need but it is not ridding me of tracking. When it worked it was great. You took the ability to change id away as well so now .what good is it? I have the installed a few times also tried your updates .to no avail. This really needs to be addressed.
Love this browser! Edit: Since Feb 22 the app is crashing constantly. At least 22 times in the past few weeks. I updated (that made it worse), uninstalled, reinstalled, checked settings, cleared cache… Nothing is helping. I have never had this issue before, but now the only way I can have a functioning phone is to get rid of this app. Which sucks. I really hope this is fixed soon. Tor is a great browser usually.
What’s the hold up??????? You have received several bad comments about the app crashing. Here’s a new one. When I visit a web site I get the “FORBIDDEN ” message. Now I am also getting this on my desktop computer, however I can change TOR circuits and gain access. This function is not available with the mobile app version. Two suggestions… 1. Please fix the instability of the mobile app. 2. Incorporate all features of the desktop version ” ability to change circuit or ID. Thanks, Wolf
Works well for accessing the Tor network. However, considering I use this app near-exclusively for an archive and would like to save photos to my device, the inability to do so is frustrating at best. Not sure if this is a bug or a sacrifice in the name of anonymity and security, though since Orfox was able to save images just fine, I’m hoping it’s the former.
On a computer, this browser is probably great, but on my Galaxy phone it’s a liability that doesn’t justify having it. It is cumbersome when loading, extremely slow, if you’re looking fo continuity when switching over it doesn’t open to the page or application you were on, you have to start over. Sometimes it doesn’t even load and the search is lacking. This all might be because of Android incompatibility, don’t know, but that’s my view. L
This is my go to browser, it could be a bit more user friendly at times, but I have been using this browser for years, and it has been consistent, and dependable! Knowing that I can safely surf the web without being tracked, spammed, or counted for some corporations statistics takes alot of the stress out of the the technology that seems necessary for every day life….
This version crashes on startup. Side-loaded previous version and found that the ONLY thing this browser does better than Orfox is load pages faster. I cannot set a font, nor can I change the font size to make it easier to read without ruining the system font… which I haven’t bothered to do, because I have the system font set the way I like it. This app is worthless to me compared to the previous version of Orfox. EPIC FAIL.
I was able to use Orfox just fine before the switch was forced. I tried using Tor from the Play store but can’t even open the app. I was able to temporarily make it work by using the apk file from the website but once it updated, it stopped working again. For reference, I have a Samsung Galaxy s7 Edge so it’s not as though my phone is THAT old. It seems like I’m not the only one with this issue. If it gets fixed, I’ll be much happier.
security is easily a 5 star rating. Speed, I would rate at 3.5 stars. Due to the necessary configuration and settings for both client and host, the decreased speed is understandable. Maybe increase speed/bandwidth of entry/exit nodes for command line emails with attachments? Then burst to recipient? This would be a big help to those that need it most. Just a thought……..
I stopped allowing it to update when it asked for permission to access my location. I kept hoping that a browser committed to privacy would get rid of that requirement, but it didn’t. Finally decided to delete when I saw that even newer versions lost the quit option, making it harder to delete history and cookies. It’s sounding less and less like a privacy-centered app, and there are other options that are faster, with very little less privacy than the current TOR version. Do better.
I run a tor bridge at home to support tor from my PC. For those who want an automatic connection, instead of hitting the connect button, I don’t. I don’t want that automatic connection clogging up my bridge or any other bridge. Would definitely degrade the network overall if automatic connection became the norm. Just my two cents. Tor is great. Support a free, open and private internet. Support tor.
Haven’t used TB in a long time so I was worried by all the complaints about the latest update. It works fine so far. I visited some clearnet and onion sites and downloaded some small files with no problems. The only complaint I have is the logo underlay behind the keyboard which is a nuisance. Also the lack of a back button that I can find. Using the system back button always feels like I’m going to exit the app by accident. I don’t remember if it’s always been this way.
Very slow at times. Needs better customization. Option to open new tab in foreground automatically and not having to click switch on every tab, to do so. Option to stop refreshing background pages, it’s very annoying to go back to an original page only to find it has refreshed back to the beginning again. I will update my rating to 4 or 5 stars as things improve.
Pretty good anonymizing software. Wish it had a step by step in setting it up though as it doesn’t make it clear that you may have to set up and use a bridge under Settings-Tor Network in order to connect properly. Second I wish that the first search box was movable as things on the bottom of the screen get crowded as they get jumbled by the nav pop up sometimes and you hit back or close.
It stopped working on Sept. 3rd. This is not the first time an update breaks TOR. It has happened in Windows10, OS X high sierra and now Android 9. In my experience TOR won’t be operational in at least 4 to 6 months. When it works the app is great and delivers excellent service. Edit 12/2020, TOR has been working smoothly for months. Its performance is much better and faster.
They added back the “Quit” menu option in latest update & I appreciate them listening to our feedback. Still cannot change the tor nodes/route as on the desktop version. That feature has been absolutely needed here for YEARS because some routes are horribly slow and/or get routed through undesirable countries from a security and privacy perspective. Can’t even see the node countries. Please find a way to add these features on Android. Will increase rating to five stars when that happens.
Issues have been fixed now it appears. Play store download is working fine. Best way to ensure privacy online. [Leaving this feedback to help others also. Developers lost a star for it not being ready to go. Works great on my old samsung j3 but kept crashing on new phone. Finally figured out to install the apk direct from website on my newer phone. If you install from play store it will not work if your android software is up to date… does work on older devices.]
Tor Browser used to be great when tabs were easily accessible at the top of the screen, when about:config still worked, and when it actually downloaded stuff. But now is too obscure on how to navigate and close open tabs, with no option to change back to the previous browser style. The option to download no longer works, add-ons are limited, the browser appears slower and has trouble re-establishing its connection to Tor if your internet connection temporarily lapses due to weak signal strength.
Used this browser on many devices, keeps the cache clear, and storage optimized, with no worries about pop-ups, slow buffering from data throttling by the local ISP, or slow streaming due to the sites third party affiliates tracking cookies. Never had an issue, but only used it for a few days at a clip due to over the road traveling. I’m not qualified to split hairs here, the quality of this app exceeds my expectations for the reasons I implement it, and that’s to improve browsing efficiency.
Okay, it’s workable now. I am a bit pissed I lost my bookmarks from Orfox, and can’t even open Orfox to manually get my onion addresses. Plus, I had to side jack the apk from the TOR site. Can’t use the one here in the play store, can’t update from the Play store either or it constantly crashes. A heads up that Orfox was at EOL would have been nice. At least let me get my bookmarks first, Geez guys. On a plus, it does connect faster and is more streamlined.
I love Tor, but in my experience this app has one considerable flaw: connectivity. It’ll often lock up/fail to connect on boot, especially when trying to connect to a control port. If you have poor mobile network connectivity or no wifi, don’t even bother trying to use Tor Browser. A fresh install gets it working again, but I shouldn’t have to uninstall and reinstall an app almost every time I use it.
Whoa! it’s greater than great. Ultimate solution of accessing any site. Secure than any other browser. It’s maybe little bit slow but worth it. With a fast connection and a secure tor VPN (such as proton VPN) it is faster than any average browser. When I talk about browser it is usually about Tor Browser. I really love it more than other browsers.
Is Tor… and Tor is good for some things. But like all technology, it can be used for both good and bad. Also, don’t be shocked when it is inevitably slower than normal browsing. It is wrapping packets in several encryption layers and bouncing then around the world before having it hit an exit node. The exit nodes present an inherent insecurity, but not terribly so. They are mostly just known to be exit nodes. But visiting anything with the .onion TLD will remain secure.
Personally, this is way better than fire fox focus. Since FFF didn’t have tabs, and I didn’t want to get a harden version of Firefox because I’ll have to update each Little extension I add on for my privacy, it’s tedious really. With Tor browser though, it’s all implemented in the app<3 My problem though...it's slow, not as slow as puffin, but it's slow non the less 🙁
GREAT BROWSER WITH BUILT IN VPN… AND NO ADS!!…It allows access to websites from all over the world while protecting my phone’s browser identity. The only really not great thing about it is that since the recent updates, firefox add ons are no longer available to download, except for a select few. I wish they would fix this issue or instruct users how yo download firefox add ons on our phones again. Just letting other users know, since their customer service is unresponsive.
No idea what’s happened since I last used this browser but it is UNSTABLE. Constant hanging and freezing and occasionally crashes while backgrounded. It’s hard to justify continuing to keep it installed. To top it off, this thing is using way too much battery to justify continued use.
Unusable on S22 Ultra. Any page that loads is patchy, crashes and eventually turns the whole screen to either black or white. Disappointing, the actual app (outside of the browsing window) looks nice and works well, shame the broken browsing renders the whole app redundant.
Moved to Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra. App not working. Rendering of pages is not working properly. Just random jibberish, and redraws pages constantly, but unreadable and unusable. **UPDATE: 3 months in, no one even acknowledged the issue let alone fox it. Unusable on S22 Ultra.
You cannot expect the similar speed as a normal browser such as Chrome, Edge, etc but hey, you can’t even expect super fast speed if you need security. Although it’s a good browser when it comes to the virtual proxy network and stuffs like that, you already know.
Honestly the best browser ever. I live in shared housing and they really limit what I can do on their internet (they have pretty much blocked everything) – Tor helps me bypass this and browse the internet for music and youtube videos that are not available in the UK with no hassle and without being tracked. Makes web searching better without all the trackers and stupid google ads popping up. Keep it going!
I just changed device for a Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra and since then I cannot use Tor Browser. The graphic rendering of websites is not working, unreadable characters are displayed instead of text, pictures and videos are randomly appearing and disappearing as I scroll… same happens with Tor Browser alpha so I’m guessing this graphic problem is not being prioritised? Other S22 users have the same problem. Big blow for me as it has been my default Browser since almost the origin of the project
There are two separate Tor apps on my phone. Allow bridge when needed and has performed well so far! No crash as mentioned in other reviews. The only con, is connection strength seems slower using a middle man browser. But still loads.
Browser is good and VPN is very good. I thought to use this as a default browser when i installed this app. But I’m disappointed, adblock add-ons and few add-ons are available and we can install it but we can’t use it. The only add-ons support on the browser is HTTPS everywhere and other add-ons are not usable even we install. I’m not sure if the add-ons is not usable, then why are you listing them for install. There is no feature on enabling those add-ons in private window.
Update-25052023: It did crash 66% of the time instead of 33% (after the previous “updates”). Update-06062022: No obvious crashes (so far) after the last update (11.0.13) but it got very slow over the past 1-2 weeks (especially in Linux). Got a bump from 1 to 4 stars for the effort in fixing the ct crashes.
App repeatedly crashing upon attempted opening. If and when it does stay open, it is having difficulty connecting to websites. Long story short, it’s a mess! Uninstalled until a new update fixes this unwanted behavior. Fortunately, I am in a country that has options, but many others do not and depend on your app, in some cases, with their lives. Please fix this!!!
Almost perfect but problems recently. Used this for a long time on nearly all my previous devices but it totally fails on my latest one. On the Samsung S22 Ultra, pages simply fail to render correctly making it unusable. Both Onion and clear Web pages simply do not render and after scrolling around, it will sometimes render something garbled. Looking on Reddit, the I see others with the same device are experiencing the same problems. EDIT: A year later, this has finally been fixed! 🥲
Honestly, this is a very good version of TOR. Obviously, it’s slow on phones, even more so on .onion links, but it works great. No issues or bugs whatsoever. Only rating it a four ‘cuz the speed is definitely something they could and should improve.
This browser was absolutely fantastic until recently. Now it’s speeds are so slow that it renders it inoperable most of the time. So very disappointing! I would have given it 5 stars, bit it’s basically useless now and I can’t use it so yeah, 1 star I’ve given it until I see change in its development
Tor is a brilliant browser. It gives you access to many websites and articles governments and corporations have censored. It even has an actively updated notification which tells you how much data it’s using! To top it off, it’s all encrypted and no one can see what you’re doing! True privacy through and through!
The recent update seems to have fixed the crashes and the connectivity issues, and the browser is back to awesome! if you still have connection issues, change the battery settings for the app to “unrestricted”.
It’s very useful! I can access the blocked website without any interruptions, also the security is very good. But the thing that i don’t like is the connection sometimes low.
Seems to work well. Wish there was an option to close and discard tabs on exit. Seems like something that would be the default behavior but it’s not even an option. Also there needs to be a New Identity option.
Understanding the importance of what TOR does, how it works and why it obviously has to be slower than a normal browser is important. It’s unfortunate that many people leaving reviews lack this understanding. I appreciate the choice (while we have a choice) to swap reduced convenience & speed for increasing security & privacy. Thank you.
Where will you go today? And why are they asking that question anyway? Don’t they already know you a bit too well? That seems to be successfully covered by this browser. Decent options as well in the settings to optimize your privacy. Never have had a problem yet using this browser.
Get real privacy. Admittedly the TOR service does slow your experience somewhat, but that’s how you know that the routing is doing its job. TOR has improved its UI and I found this to be a pleasantly suprising experience compared to first time I used it years ago. Most websites function as normal when using TOR; and if you don’t mind a slower service treaded for security then this browser is the one for you. Want to know more about TOR and its functality then read about it on Wikipedia.
Not really experienced any issues i can blame on the app. Tor browser is slow by design, it’s not meant to be used as your go to browser. It works as it should for my needs.
Carshes repeatedly when I press connect. Tried restarting my phone, clearing cache etc, but the crashing does not seem to go off. Then I got samsung notification stating the app carries a bug, please ask the developer to fix it.
Tor browser is getting hung and becomes unresponsive while we use multiple tabs. It provides a popup asking to wait or close. It happens all the time. Really bad. Putting only 2 stars since unable to use it. Uninstalling the browser
negative: When you try the horizontal rotate the browser crash and this is a bug. positive: Excellent interface the bar down is very comfortable and the browser is fast enough
Great app for people who want a safe alternative browser option. All you do is hit Connect to start a session, then use the app for whatever you like. Would highly recommend.
Tried to watch the Tor video. Nothing happened when I clicked the > icon to watch. I set languages to English, tried a feedback form. The page isn’t in English & that’s all I read + speak, there’s no submit button See screenshots I took of everything.
I’m sorry, but I thought I was gonna like it. It is very slow. That is fine, I’m pretty patient at this kind of stuff. But all tabs closing every time I close the app is irritating. I have to find them one by one again and again. Then, images can’t even load. At every website. It’s so infuriating.
