Zelle® has partnered with leading banks and credit unions across the U.S. to bring you a fast, safe and easy way to send money to friends and family. Money moves quickly – directly from bank account to bank account. If your bank or credit union offers Zelle, you already have it in your mobile banking app or online banking – if they don’t, the Zelle app will make it easy for you to send money to enrolled Zelle users that already have access through their financial institution.

Zelle. This is how money moves®.

Using just your recipient’s email address or U.S. mobile number, you can settle up simply and safely with almost anyone you know and trust. Even better, Zelle does not charge any fees to use the service. (Mobile carrier or bank fees may apply).

GET STARTED:
1. Download the Zelle app.
2. Enroll using a Visa® or Mastercard® debit card linked to a U.S. checking account; or
3. Enroll your U.S. checking account by using your online banking username and password, if your bank supports this feature*.
4. Choose a person to pay, or request money from, by entering their U.S. mobile number or email address.
5. Confirm the amount and hit send. If they’re already enrolled with Zelle, they’ll typically get the money in minutes. If they aren’t, they will be notified and can follow a few simple steps to complete the payment.

*Some banks allow customers to enroll in the Zelle app using their online or mobile banking username and password.

  1. Not sure if I have an account with Zelle at this point. I’ve attempted to use Zelle multiple times throughout 2 years, but I could never set it up without errors occurring. I’ve attempted it again today, and guess what happened? An error occurred! An error occurred when I tried logging in and an occurred when I tried setting up an account. This app doesn’t want to work at all.

  2. When it works, it’s great and simple. Unfortunately, I’ve had multiple instances where the app would just randomly stop working. It’s usually in an urgent situation when I need to send money that the app will not even let me log in. My understanding is that it ties to the backend system… regardless, the app isn’t always reliable.

  3. Luci Arel dice:

Frustrating. The app tells me I need to update my bank card with the new expiration date, but that is actually not an option? Instead, I must “Switch Accounts,” which will result in the loss of transaction history connected to the previous card. This is highly inconvenient. Also, I dislike that I need neither a password nor a fingerprint to log in.

  4. Very good in processing the sending/receiving money, but has a fingerprint security option that even enable doesn’t work. It would be nice if that option pops up before submitting your phone number to confirm that you are the rightful owner Atwell the message that anyone that access to your phone could copy/paste the code, that would be an extra layer of security so the one that’s handling the app is the right person. Thanks for the job done till now

  5. Installed the app, followed the directions, confirmed both my cellphone number and my email address. Got an error message every time I tried to send money, using both the recipient’s phone number and their email address (both confirmed to be correct, as the app confirmed their name) Reinstalled the app, restarted my phone, tried both my wifi network and my cellular data network. I don’t like that an app which has so much of my personal information failed at the first hurdle. Worse than useless.

  6. The app’s function of sending money person to person has done its job. The interface is very direct, “send” or “request.” I wish the transaction list posted the date of when it happened and not how long ago it happened. I like that the money goes from bank to bank, at least that’s how I perceive it. I’ve read security issues from the media but I haven’t encountered any. So hopefully, they continue to work on improving the security. Overall, it’s been a good experience. Keep it up Zelle!!

  7. Never works consistently and just got worse… This app always gives errors or freezes. And recently, it tries to force you to use Zelle through another banking app. For my particular bank, Altura Credit Union, it always wants to send a security code to text (which doesn’t work) so I have it sent to email. However, once I successfully log into the app, whenever I click the send button, it just gets stuck on a loading screen… The only way I could send people money is if they send a request

  8. I like this app for the ease of sending and receiving money, but using the app is really maddening because as soon as you’re in one page, say looking at your account info there’s no back arrow to get back to the main page. The only way to move through pages within the app is to completely close it and sign in again which is just ridiculous! Needs work!

  9. Awful, Awful, Awful! Compared to the commercial payment apps, this is a huge step back. Kinda like Taxi vs. Uber/Lyft. Only redeeming fact is that it’s backed by the banks, so barrier to entry is very low. EDIT: Terrible experience while traveling. With a foreign SIM in my phone, I can’t use Zelle at all. Worse, even with my US SIM in, it ONLY works over mobile data – not over WiFi. And it doesn’t work at all when I use dual SIM.

  10. The app shows numerous errors when trying to send money even though I’ve been using zelle for years and have sent money to said person, every month. Yet, I have to try and process the payment probably 5+ times before it actually goes through. Always gives me an error and says contact my bank. EVENTUALLY, the payment will go through if I keep trying over and over again. This app truly sucks and they don’t ever seem to release an update to fix the issue.

  11. Could not send money. Tried 4 times! Customer service is close to impossible to get ahold of! Their autovoice navigating options are confusing and I couldn’t get to the right place no matter how many different options I tried. Even tried requesting an email response by sending them a message on their website: did not hear back from them (even checked my spam folder). They were completely unreachable for me. The only reason why I gave them any stars is because they used to work in the past.

  12. When I first used zelle it was awesome for like 3 straight months. The last few months have been a nightmare though. I always get an error when I’m trying to send money or it crashes, the same thing when someone tries to send me money. I don’t know what happened but this app has completely dropped the ball. I have to resort to the cash app just to send money, you have to pay a fee, but if rather do that then use this app. This app was great, free to send or receive money, now it’s the worst out. The low rating truly tells the horrible experiences with it. STAY AWAY!!

  13. The app itself is fine, but when I ran into some issues with it recognizing my card’s info (which was frustrating in itself because all was entered correctly), the customer service I received was very poor. Definitely among the worst customer service experiences I’ve had. I’d explain further but I’m still too frustrated. And, they kept referring to other card numbers that weren’t mine, which makes me question how secure our info is with them. I don’t trust them anymore.

  14. Update: The issue’s been fixed and the app works like it should. I actually love this app, but a recent issue makes it unusable. I tried to send money like I have in the past, and it starts sending, then says “logged out because of inactivity” and the transaction doesn’t go through. I definitely haven’t been inactive in that session, as I just hit the send button 2 seconds prior. This is clearly a bug that needs to be fixed. Until it is, I will have to find another way to send money like this.

  15. whoever designed this app needs to go back to school. from installation to usage, is a disaster. just an example of something that should be simple and straighforward. when signing in, it sends a code to your email. The app does not allow to multi task so when you open your email to read the code and come back to the app it resets the whole process and sends a different code every time.

  16. I used the app twice – first time for $1as a test transaction, then a real transfer. That was a few months ago. Now, I can’t remember the password but when I click forgot password it keeps telling me incorrect password. We’ll, duh! So, because I kept trying varying iterations I’m locked out. After reading so many negative reviews I better cut my losses and not bother.

  17. So far i really like the program. No fee’s or percentage payments. Some people don’t like the 2 step verification’s it uses frequently. I however think it’s good to have, especially with an app that deals with finance’s. There haven’t been any issues I’ve come across personally but have had a couple friends experiencing problems. One other thing that I’ve noticed is that more and more banks and credit unions have been intigrating Zelle too, so the app isn’t needed when sending money.

  18. Unable to type numbers when trying to sign up. My husband was able to use a number keypad inside the app to get started but mine just acts unresponsive. No numbers pop up at all. The links at the bottom of the screen are unresponsive to touch as well. I tried installing, uninstalling, and reinstalling 3x. My husband’s phone is identical to mine and we are using the same service. We tried setting up Zelle at the same time. I have permissions for phone and location granted & still doesn’t work.

  19. I was able to use for three successful transfers. As of May 1st 2020 the app will not load. It is in the same phone with all correct information. The absolutely will not open in the phone. My only guess is the phone has been upgraded to Android 10 it may not be compatible. Uninstall and restart is unsuccessful. No other apps on the phone have this issue.

  20. Works ok once it is setup. I was not able to setup my checking account with my debit card, until i was. Not very consistent setup process. I don’t want to give it access to my contacts; I don’t know if this information is used outside of my phone. I input the recipient’s email or phone number they have associated with Zelle, but the app gives no feedback before or after sending the money about the recipient’s name. It also doesn’t remember your transactions.

  21. Worked great for several months and then it wouldn’t send the money. Kept logging me out when I pressed “Send”. After uninstalled & reinstalled, will only send money without notation. A bummer for records. Makes paying easy for people who want cash. If you don’t use it for several months, you might have to sign up again and you lose the records from the old account. Got notes back. Worked fine for another year. Now same problem.

  22. You can send someone money from your debit card or bank account using their phone number or email. Unfortunately, it doesn’t tell you who you’re sending it to until after you confirm send. I sent cash from my account to a number hoping and praying I typed it in correctly. I would like to see a name with the number before hitting send. It does show in the activity who you sent it to, but that was after the unsettling “you cannot cancel this transaction once you hit send” notification. I’m deleting the app. It served its purpose but I won’t be using it again. Venmo, the cash app, and paypal are better options for me.

  23. It technically works. It’s not the best app and it has many shortcomings but at least it’s a safe and secure way to send money instantly. My girlfriend and I switched to zelle exclusively from venmo and it pales when you compare the features. For instance you can add a memo on your end but the person on the other side will not be able to see what the charge is for. This seems like a massive oversight as the memo is one of the most important pieces of a transfer.

  24. Tracy B dice:

I had previously posted that I love the app except for having to reenter my recipient every time. I wish I would just save it and let me choose it again. Now, after more than 3 months, it won’t let me send unless I allow it to access my contacts. That’s not happening. Ever. I emailed to see if there was a way around it, but I never heard back. I’m deleting the app, but if I learn that their grab for my contacts is no longer mandatory, I will definitely install it again.

  25. Clunky, slow, inconvenient. It has to “think” every time I try to make a change, most of which don’t even go through because it times out and reverts back. Super obnoxious to have to hit “sign in” every time I open the app. The sign-in screen should be the default. Sign-in process is outdated and slow. There should be other options for quick sign in than just fingerprint.

  26. It’s a sluggish, ugly app with poor error messages. Worst of all, it demands access to your entire contacts list, as there is NO OTHER WAY to specify the person with whom you’re transacting. This whole system seems like a front for gathering information on people. Indeed, the terms of service say that the app employs a “third-party” tool to scan your device for malware, you know, to keep you safe, or something; I’m not even sure how that’s possible, because this app doesn’t seem to request access

  27. Tried 3 times to put in my info when signing up and ran into the same error each time after continually agreeing to the same (sometimes odd) agreements that i was forced to agree to in order to sign up (such as allowing the app to make phone calls from my phone). Based on my experience and the massive amount of recent 1 star reviews that people are leaving for a variety of reasons, it appears this app is going down the toilet. I just deleted this app and won’t ever be re downloading it again

  28. Seems to work ok, but the UI feels VERY minimal and there are some weird rules. I can send to some people, but not others. Even if someone sends me money, they don’t show up as a recent contact so I could send back to them. I also can’t see what email or phone number sent to me, so I have to guess which one they used. In it’s current state, it feels like I have to call someone, setup a transaction with them and then confirm they received it. Could be much better!

  29. Update: still garbage!! Someone requested payment through here and I figured they’d have worked the issues out. Nope! Doesnt tell you this upfront but you can’t pay businesses with a debit card. And they don’t work with our bank. Still completely useless. Completely useless. Trying to sign up just gives an error that says There was an issue. Very helpful message. So many apps get electronic payment right, this one doesn’t.

  30. *updated review: the app updated and now I can’t log in. Beyond inconvenient* So easy. I haven’t had any issues with sending or receiving money. I haven’t personally had to cancel a transaction, but a coworker did when she sent the wrong person money. It was easy to cancel and fix. I’ve had the app for about six months now and love it!

  31. Sami Boi dice:

TRASH. STAY AWAY!!! After many attempts to send money, I keep getting the same error message over and over again. “Unable to process transaction.A101” Its NOT a bank issue. I restarted my phone. Uninstalling the app and reinstalling does nothing. Support is a joke. When the app wants to work it works, and when it doesn’t it doesn’t. VERY frustrating as I need to use this often, and often, the error message comes up. So annoying. Switching to something that works. STAY AWAY

  32. I never write app reviews. Ever. This is my first one. I can’t even sign in, the interface is trash on Android. Literally no keyboard appears to sign in, it’s a screen with unclickable buttons when before it worked just fine. Your time is better spent on another app cuz this ain’t it. I’m STILL trying to get my money. You would think this would have an online option in case things like this happen but they seem to be so focused on cornering the app market, this is your only way to access money.

  33. This is the third time I’ve tried over the past year and a half to sign up and every time without fail it directs me to page where it asks for my mobile number, I enter it and a red notification of up telling me error occurred to again later. Of course no customer service to find out what did could be. So I’ve never been past that part. Tried on multiple devices as well. Same thing. Really frustrating.

  34. This app WILL allow you to transfer money, albeit with very annoying issues. It only allows one transfer daily. Secondly, it allows you to immediately send money anywhere to anyone; WITHOUT password verification. Despite multiple calls, customer service has been unable to resolve this matter, always instructing me to delete and reinstall the app (though the problem persists). The last Brainiac even accused my Android phone of causing the zelle app to bypass security protocols. Unbelievable!!!

  35. Completely useless if you use a bank outside of their network. They claim you can connect with a debit card, but any attempt at that just gives errors, and eventually locks your account entirely. I contacted their support and they claimed nothing was wrong and told me to try again. And, no surprise, it still didn’t work. Go with something reliable like Venmo, this app is complete garbage.

  36. Absolutely terrible experience. I can’t get into my account since I switched phone carriers and, because of that, they supposedly can no longer verify my information. I even offered to answer questions to verify my identity and they said that wasn’t an option because they “do everything electronically”. Their only solution was for me to open a whole new bank account with one of their partner institutions. Terrible app, terrible customer service, terrible product. Send money another way. 0 *

  37. Susan L dice:

I rarely send money through Zelle, just receive it, so I don’t login into the app very often. Recently my debit card was replaced, so I opened the app to enter the new one. The app is completely frozen once I get to the sign-in page. I can’t sign in, and if I tap on privacy policies or terms of use, nothing happens. I’ve restarted my phone, and uninstalled, then installed the app again, but it still isn’t working. Unfortunately, it seems that you can’t use Zelle through the website.

  38. Pathetic experience. I have TWO bank accounts, one they partner with, one not. Couldn’t connect either one of them. Called assistance, took FOREVER to finally speak to someone and they tell me my account info doesn’t match. Nope. I’m looking at it right now. It’s fine. I’ve registered other financial link (like mint) just fine. Essentially, they’re inept. Actively avoiding in the future. Stick with PayPal and venmo and checks. I would have gotten the money faster if I’d been MAILED a check.

  39. The Zelle app itself is pretty terrible. I caynt do basic things like see more details of my transaction history, change my profile photo from existing photos (force closes), and recently had to reinstall and change my password. Each log in attempt, at the point of verifying my phone number, turned the screen partially black and was insanely glitchy looking. Not sure why this is a contender against other apps that provide similar services, with much more user-friendly interfaces.

  40. Not a fan of this app. Click on text to get security code to register, then it takes you right back to the main screen to enter info all over again only to have to click off again to get security code which leads right back to the same problem. Can’t open on computer because it’s indicating it’s already downloaded on my phone. An app is no good if you can’t use it. Hands down review all the way.
