How it works
Most aircraft today are equipped with ADS-B transponders that transmit positional data. Flightradar24 has a rapidly growing network of over 20,000 ground stations around the world to receive this data that then shows up as aircraft moving on a map in the app. In an expanding number of regions, with the help of multilateration, we’re able to calculate the positions of aircraft that don’t have ADS-B transponders. Coverage in North America is also supplemented by real-time radar data. Coverage is variable and subject to change at any time.

If you love flights, or if you love tracking, you MIGHT LIKE this app. But, if you love tracking flights, you’ll LOVE this app! And just pay the couple bucks to get rid of the ads. Why skimp on that in times of $6 gasoline? Useful for people who travel by air a lot, of course, but for those of us who just like flying machines, it’s a super fun way to identify every contraption passing over our heads.
Best free tracker I’ve ever used! Definitely the most accurate one, and being able to watch the icons taxiing, taking off, and landing is really cool. My only issue is that it seems to not be very precise on the takeoff and landing areas. The icons will freeze at the beginning of takeoff, overshoot the runway every landing, and the altitude indicator will continue to read 800ft after landing. Still the best free app.
Historically, app worked great. Also have the apple store version on another device. Lately I’ve noticed the apple device still correctly shows flights but Google version shows only flight crafts at airports. Planes in view all have altitude = 0. I have no filters set but can’t see any active flights on this version. Fortunately the iPad version still works correctly. Thanks for any info you can provide.
I enjoy this app. I feel everything works well. I hope they will continue to add features like: 1. Filtering types of aircraft displayed. 2. Better persistence when following an aircraft (when you come back, that flight will be dropped off tracking, and gone off the screen if zoomed in too far.) I appreciate customer service, when I’ve had problems, they are fast to get back to me and are helpful! I recommend this app!
Great app compared to others. Two issues for me. One is the inability to track MLAT and other military only by filter and the second one is that my aircraft icons on the map are now translucent. I cannot find a way to get them solid again. Filters and controls are clunky. Edit: The developer’s reply fixed my translucent icon issue. I was following an airline and forgot. Once I un-followed it, problem solved. Awesome response and support. I upped the rating to 5 stars.
Works well, can be a tad slow at times but nothing really negative to say. One feature I wish it had, or maybe I’m just missing it, is the ability to sort and track by Military aircraft only. Been watching around Europe for such flights but it is difficult with commercial flights around. Thank s for the great app.
I like how you can tap on any flight and the app pulls up the flight infomation and the aircraft infomation. Also, I can look up any airport around the world in real time. What I have a problem with is you can’t look up a specific flight within the app itself. If the developers can fix my issue, then I give the app five stars. Keep up the good work with the app.
This app has become intolerable of late! Persisting connection issues and server errors. And when I’m finally able to connect, planes on the runway preparing to taxi keep jumping around and rotating uncontrollably. The 3D view is completely useless planes are moving sideways and in reverse, jumping over buildings and other planes before take-off and after landing. If this isn’t remedied soon, I’m not paying for another subscription.
I’ve been using this app for a while but the latest updates have made it pretty wonky and seemingly unstable. Flights bounce backwards and forwards, tracking disappears. The in-app feedback function does not work now. They said they have been having usage and server issues and working to correct them. These problems began with their update on 25 Feb.
Good flight tracker. Good options and pretty accurate. I really like it and it works well with my S21Ultra. F16s have been practicing around Randolph AFB but this app won’t pick them up in the area, even with the correct settings. They were practicing for an upcoming airshow in San Antonio. The app picked them up not to long ago. 🤷🏼♂️
Just using the free version, but I love it. Edit: Lately there has been a lot of lag. For example, i can see planes take off from Long Beach airport (approx. 6 miles away from my house). On the app I’ll follow a plane away from the terminal to the runway and it will sit there for several minutes, but i can see the plane airborne.
Flightradar24 is superior and my number one flight tracking app. It’s smooth, works fantastic, and always gives the best results for all flights around in the sky, and also for tracking my flight(s), or other people like friends and family that I’m tracking on their flight(s). I love the live 3D view and tracking the flight to see it in the sky, and feeling like I’m on the flight. Also, the AR for tracking planes in the sky with my phone is cool too
It’s interesting to observe to air traffic in my area. Way too many planes and routes identified as “N/A” but I don’t think that’s the app’s fault. One thing I’d change is how if you accidentally touch the 3D view, it takes one of your very limited credits. It would be nice to have a confirmation button before doing that.
I’ll keep my old paid version. It does the job. Too many nags to update, too many ads. To get all the features is too expensive and it’s an annual fee on top of that. Upgraded version is not for the causal user. Also, the squawk feature won’t turn off even if unchecked. Annoying. Had some trouble trying to track back to back flights. It only kept the first flight active in the search box and would not load the second flight even after it was airborne until about an hour into its flight. The old version worked fine. The rest of the app works great and is enjoyable. But not for the price.
I love this app when it works correctly. But for months now, attempting to pinch out to expand the map causes it to lock up. Now, not only does the simple pinch out to expand gesture lock up the app, but it locks up my entire phone, and I am forced to do a hard reset to get it working again. I am running Android 9 and have a fast internet connection. The above is completely unacceptable. To the above, the developer suggests screenshots, etc. Sorry, please read: I cannot. The Phone Hangs.
During the trial period, I was very impressed with Flightradar24. It showed all local planes and helicopters. I subscribed. Since then, I’m very disappointed. Now it shows maybe 10% of what’s in the air. My free “Plane Finder” shows more. I’ve adjusted the filters but still get nearly zero. Would like to cancel because it’s now worthless.
Absolutely awesome! If you’ve ever heard a plane or helicoptor, or looked up to see a jet contrail and wondered where it was going, came from, who owns it, what it actually looks like, how high/fast it is, etc., then I highly recommend this app. Very user-friendly, and accurate real time data for just about everything you’ll see in the skies, including commercial, private, police, and most military transport aircraft. Only combat craft and a few old planes did not show up for obvious reasons.
I have never been much into planes and things but I stumbled upon this app and now I am constantly monitoring the skies. Do yourself a favor and spend the money annually to purchase this app. The amount of features and work that has been put into it are well worth it. As if tracking planes wasnt interesting enough, the options for what to view on the map and the details of each flight are wonderful. The 3D rendering feature is a great touch. Truly well done thank you for making a great app.
I am using the free version of this app to keep an eye on aircraft fighting wildfires in the area, and it works great for this. Sometimes the aircraft drops off view, but that’s technology and probably terrain issues. My only regret, which is unavoidable, is that it requires data, so if i’m hiking in an area without service, there is no connection and aircraft can’t be tracked. But that’s not the fault of the app at all.
Free version best I have used. When somebody we know is flying. I track their flight from takeoff, in-flight and landing, including actual departure, arrival and in-flight times. No wondering pickup time it’s there on Flightradar24. This app is so good I purchased the Gold version and that adds a whole new list of features that I dig and use often. We have family and friends using free, others 1 of the pay versions. Worth checking it out. I think your going to like.
Tried the 1 week free trial, glad I didn’t have to pay for it beforehand. Needed Filters & Alerts but couldn’t get Alerts to work properly the whole week. The app should send an Alert when your chosen plane enters the map area selected. This would work on 1 of every 10 planes. The rest were on the ground when I got an alert even though I didn’t adjust altitude settings to zero (or set them at all). Fix this and I’ll be happy to pay your yearly fee.
Works again after map hotfix but really, what’s the point? As a purchaser of the former pro version, I, like all the others, have been abandoned by the developer when they upgraded the app to require a paid subscription. Now, to keep the benefits we had as an original purchaser, they want us to pay again. And again, and again, etc, etc, etc. No thanks!
I have been using Flightradar24 for over 10 years, and the Android app for 5-10 years. It has always been my go-to flight tracker. Improvements are made frequently, and the app just keep getting better. It is not bogged down by including features not important to its basic premise. Help is supplied quickly and in a friendly fashion. I use some other flight trackers but always come back to Flightradar24. Keep up the good work!
Very detailed app when it comes to tracking flights, viewing history of the aircraft as far as where it’s been, the age of the aircraft by showing how long it has been it service and multiple picture of the actual aircraft. my biggest gripe is probably a small one. The ability to save the track aircraft that you are looking for. To like a list. That has alerts to it I will notify you when an aircraft is went a specific range or on the ground.
I don’t trust this developer. It left users of the previous PURCHASED version out in the cold with only an offer of an extended free trial. NO, I purchased this app with a one-time fee and I do not understand why they cannot honor these purchasers with a basic, ad-free experience. Install at your own risk and subscribe knowing that at anytime after you have paid, they will change the terms again and it’s either pay up or get out. I don’t see much more new in this version of the app than I did in the old. If you paid for the old and end up installing this one, you’ll see pretty much the same thing with the exception of a huge ad at the top until you subscribe.
I checked my email, I also paid for the premium version of this app in Feb 2017. I’m also going to delete the app right before the 90 day free trial ends. I will not be bombarded with ads and I won’t pay $10 a year for an app that I use less than 5 minutes a month. I have no interest in you asking me to email you, so you can tell me how the old app was from 2010 and new technologies had to be employed. Tech gets cheaper as years go by, not more expensive by 20 times or more. Do whats right!
I had this on my old phone and didn’t have any issues. When I got a new phone I almost immediately had problems with the system UI and apps stopping and freezing. I factory reset my phone, then reinstalled this app, and I immediately started having problems again. Didn’t matter whether it was running or not. Not sure what the problem was but hopefully an update can fix it.
It does as good as you can expect. It does not put you on the planes exact location but pretty close. You are able to track most planes if you spot one in the air. It works very well on most airports departing and incoming flights. The only reason I gave it a 4 star was because you are not following the planes exact location. Thank you developers for the app. A job well done.
Very disappointed that an App that I paid for just one day quits working forever. That is like a car manufacturer telling you “sorry your car is 10 years old and you’ll need to buy a new one. We’ve disabled it” I’ve been using the paid Pro version since it originally came out and probably would have supported the move if given the choice. But not when its forced.
I really like this app. I live in the L.A. area so there’s a ton of air traffic, several airports. I hear planes overhead all the time, it’s really cool to be able to see their altitude & destination. And I love the flight following feature too. You can email/message yourself (or someone else) the link to follow a specific flight–that could be really handy.
App is fine and new features are attractive. I am another former pro version user and am very disappointed that the other app is at its end of life (even though it’s working just fine, it will now be turned off.) I think turning off ads should be a one-time payment of something reasonable like we paid for pro on the other app. If the new app will last ten years, the cheapest subscription will cost you $100 for those years-for silver level, as gold is $350. Subscription model is awful compared.
This is a great app. I have used it when picking up neighbors at the airport. Being able to watch the aircraft in route reduces pick-up time. Allows for a perfect curbside pick-up. The airports should help fund this.app. Just the ablity to identify an aircraft flying overhead is a satisfying and wonderful feature. It ads to you awareness of your surroundings and your air travels. You dont need to ask the ticket agent for flight information anymore. Lots of useful stuff in this app.
The new version of Flight Radar 24, and a previous paid old app user, the move to the new version was a disappointing one for many of the users. One feature that the new version is missing is the favorites star at the top of the old version where you could save a map location and it remembered each. So, now using the new version you have to go to the search prompt, and put in an airport ID. Problem is the new map location doesn’t remember any custom saved views. No plans to add that back.
I had paid for the original app upgrade for a lifetime sub. Now that is all over and I have to pay a subscription fee every year. Love the app, but not the bait and switch. To top it off, I was offered three months of silver sub free but when I decided to bite the bullet and get a new sub, the app only gave me one week free. Another bait and switch.
I had to scroll down a long list to find the airline. This is not good. Also I had to enter airport codes rather than the city names. This is not a good feature either. Number three, the plane I wanted to track should be shown alone on the map rather than a gazillion of others. Why would I want to see all the other planes? That’s why, i an uninstalling your app two minutes after i installed it.
I paid for the pro version, and I understand when you add new features that you have the right to charge a premium. However when you retard features and degrade performance, that’s making the app less than what I bargained for when I purchased it. It seems you’re getting a bit greedy. I hope others keep this in mind when they consider purchasing.
I live in a very quiet place on Long Island where the only noise is from the ever increasing, now almost, incessant aircraft. This app allows me to at least find out who my tormentors are, how high they are and where they are from or going. I usually have good visibility of much of the sky and the app is accurate and timely, unlike other air tracking map apps.
Flight Radar 24 service is getting worse and worse. If it is not persistent outages it is other issues. I love this app but this time they went too far. I have an active paid subscription for the Gold plan. Shorty after the monthly charge was taken out of my account they switched me back to basic. So, they took my money and ran basically. I paid for the service and I am not recieving what I paid for. I emailed customer service, they told me my account has expired but yet it shows paid for.
Destination is often missing. Origin is occasionally as well. When I check those same flights on FlightAware, they’re not missing. Need to be able to show more text labels on the map for each flight than just aircraft type. Need to be able to view origin and destination on the arrival departure boards. Map type coloring needs improvement, especially the darker ones (hard to see details). Update: I’veso noticed some flights are just missing (but FA shows them), and wrong pictures.
I signed up for a 7 day trial of the Gold subscription. While using the app I noticed that a lot of information wasn’t showing up on flights near my house, and the airport a few miles away didnt’t show up. All of this info was on a free version of FlightAware. I decided to cancel the subscription in the google app store (as instructed in the app) but my credit card had already been charged even though the full 7 days was not up yet. I want a refund!
