Calm is recommended by top psychologists, therapists, mental health experts, and the press:
* “I’m generally wary of meditation apps because they sometimes weave in too much mystic talk for my taste. But Calm instead contains guidance like ‘Concentrate on your body’” – New York Times
* “In the frenetic, crazy, digital world we live in, sometimes it’s necessary to take a step back and smell the roses” – Mashable
* “Eliminating distraction…ended up helping me relax and realize that all the stuff I was stressing about wasn’t that big a deal” – Tech Republic
* “Found myself similarly refreshed afterward” – TechCrunch
Downloaded to hear more “brown noise” that was advertised on a tv commercial, since the app was free.. but once I opened it, before showing me anything about how it might work, it asks me to subscribe to a $69.99 annual subscription. When I click close on that screen another opens to offer me “today only”, 40% of at $41.99. As near as I can tell only one sound is available without paying for their subscription. Bait and switch. Free app, but you have to pay a subscription fee to try and use it.
I’ve used this app for years, and I’ll never use it again. There used to be a lot of free soundscapes and sleep stories. But suddenly the soundscapes I’ve been listening to for over a year without the subscription are all behind a pay wall when they weren’t yesterday. I’m disgusted at the dev team for reducing free access so much. Having to pay for new content is one thing, but to remove access to old content is underhanded.
The only thing I don’t like is you can’t watch in landscape mode. I’m an epileptic always looking for ways to help my brain. The songs alone are fantastic. All deferent types of meditation for all levels. The calming and sleep songs and meditations are second to none. Thank you so much for your research and help. Don’t think I’ll ever unsubscribe.
“Free 3 month trial” false advertising, not even one where you can cancel after the 3 months. You literally have to buy a whole year and you get 3 months off, you still have to pay them for a service you have no idea how it is. That isn’t a trail, you see a trail is when you let people try your service to see if they want it, really scummy tactic
I’ve been using the app with a yearly subscription for a couple months now. I generally like it but there are a few things that make me doubt I’ll resubscibe if they aren’t addressed: 1. I’d like to have many more lightly guided meditations longer than 10 minutes. A bit less talking! 2. I appreciate the use of soundscapes as background. But there are often audible and distracting clips when they loop on themselves. 3. The UI is quite poor and disorienting.
I really think this app is too expensive. I mostly use it for sleep stories lately but have used the meditation in the past and while I think it’s a great tool, there really should be more features included when it’s so GD expensive. One main frustration I have is that you can’t make a playlist for sleep stories. I can try to find the longest story but it will still quit before the story is done most of the time. Please add this feature, I think it’s a pretty simple ask when I’m paying $70.
I’ve had this app for years and have loved the free options. There are certain ones I listen to when I sleep or meditate. I recently upgraded my phone and in so doing have learned that there are no free options anymore. Very frustrating, & poor service as they won’t fix it. I had to go on my old phone, change downloaded pieces to ogg files, save them in my music folder, and transfer to my new phone that way. But I won’t be using Calm anymore. 🙄
Not worth it. I had the paid version for awhile (2 years) and the daily meditations were nice but not worth the price. Some sleep sounds were always free if you didn’t have a subscription, but suddenly all the free ones locked. There is literally nothing free on the app at all now. Deleting.
Love the app. There is a great variety of options for all types of situations. One of the best benefits is that you can download some so that you can listen offline in any environment because you never know when you’ll need it on the spur of the moment. I wish that the discover option could find one to improve visualization meditation.
This is basically unusable unless you buy the premium option for 69.99/yr. I wanted to try out prior to purchasing anything (or using the 7day free trail). I have been searching for over 10 mins to find something that is part of the “free” app with no luck. If you are looking for free this is not the app for you.
I would like to have the ability to create a playlist. This way I could do a nice 10 minute meditation when I get into bed. Then a story could play after while I’m trying to drift off and then maybe a sound escape to play for the next while. Hopefully I’m asleep by now. The ability to create a playlist would be a great feature to compliment what calm has to offer.
I’ve had a subscription for a couple of years and I mainly use the app for sleep stories. The content is fantastic! However, there are some obvious things missing that you’d thing are easy to add: -repeat? -creating playlists? Moshi, this app’s sister app has had these features forever. There’s nothing more disruptive than waking up in the middle of the night and having to fiddle with my phone to put back on a sleep story. I wish these would be added, as this would make the app 100x better!
App had gone to 💩! I occasionally use this for when I can’t sleep because I work nights I come home very late sometimes after the sun comes up. This app can help drain out the noise of neighbors, traffic and leaf blowers. But I had a wonderful surprised the last two times I used it. Each day I was woken up about 4 hours after I fell asleep at around 6:00 a.m. because of stupid ad notifications coming from this app!!! It’s an app to help you sleep and it’s literally waking you up now. 🤦🏻
Have been using this app daily for a few years. It is the only way I can fall asleep consistently, and I use it to meditate at work when I am stressed. I love it. Has been a game changer for me. I like that they have added some shorter meditations for when i don’t have much time. The content is kept fresh and i have some favorites i go to time after time.
I used this app a couple of years ago or so and thought I would try it again since I’ve been having trouble sleeping. I almost cried no joke when I realized my saved nature sounds were now only accessable via paid subscription. Guess it’s back to Spotify. Clips this generic should be part of the free version. Disappointed is an understatement.
Use it almost Daily. Has really helped me to get into meditating and working on myself. They are always adding new features too. Really love the daily stretch and move plus the sleep sounds are great at night. I snagged a lifetime membership when it was running and couldn’t be happier with my decision. I am always telling people about this app when they are interested in trying meditation. I’ve sent the free month to so many friends and family.
I love the content and intentions of this app. However, when using the daily check-in tools to document daily thoughts, it’s extremely difficult for me to read white print on a bright pink background and there are no settings options to adjust the brightness or disable the bright colored backgrounds. Also, the fact that I can’t go back to a previous date and or edit an entry is unfortunate…as much as I’d like to continue using this up to document my journey, pen and paper is more convenient.
Great content, great talent choices and updated frequently. I would like the option to customize sleep story playlists, or if it already there, it needs to be easier to find and use. Music playlists can be a little glitchy. All in all a great app that I have used for years and will continue to make part of my daily routine.
I would give this app a higher rating, but for some reason when I set the sleep timer, it will override my volume settings and keep lowering the volume. There is no option to turn this off. If I set the sleep timer for 2 hours, I don’t want the volume lowering every two minutes. By the time half an hour goes by I can’t even hear the sound. And the lowering audio is jarring, having the opposite effect. Please fix or tell me how to prevent this from happening.
I’ve used this app for several years after being impressed with what they offered for free. I paid for a yearly subscription twice. There was no lifetime option back then. Would be nice if they let you pay to own because this app is REALLY expensive. The content is good, but some stuff is repeated after a year, so I stopped paying, only to find out they don’t offer ANYTHING except a tutorial for free anymore. You used to be able to do the current daily calm session at least. Lost a longtime user
The content of the app is fantastic and growing regularly. The sleep stories calm my daughter’s brain and let her sleep. We really need the ability to create a playlist of our favorite sleep stories, or content in general. That way we can keep it on throughout the night to help her get back to sleep if she wakes. Either that or the ability to put them on repeat.
I don’t understand. The description says that much of the app is free, but I can’t find any of the free features. I was really looking forward to trying out some of the free content, because I’d planned to subscribe if I liked it, but this bait and switch has made a terrible first impression. My galaxy phone automatically loaded 4 “stories” from Calm into my native clock app – I’m guessing these are the only free items in the entire app? Disappointed.
Updating my review after another year of usage. Content is 5 stars, technical features are 0 stars. Given the high price, I can’t recommend this app. Content often freezes, the audio glitches. It randomly stops your current session midway to give you the “great job” messaging from the end of your last session. There’s no playlist abilities and it’s all EXTREMELY difficult to navigate. They need to take some best practices from podcast and audiobook devs and fix the user experience big time.
I’d used headspace before, and it was a great app. this i got access through my insurance, and it to us great. navigation is easier than headspace, and they have a lot of guided meditations for anything that you want to focus out work on. it makes learning to meditate and enjoy the benefits it brings to daily life. totally worth it.
Just expensive for all the issues. 70 is a large some for some people to commit to when they don’t know if they’ll want to use the app for a year. Might help to offer a monthly billing option at 6 to 9 dollars a month with the discount for year at the current 70. 7 days trial isn’t enough time to really know if you’ll use something in the long term. I’d try a month at a lower rate but 70 on an app I might not use long term is too much.
Used 3 years. Good content. Unfortunately for the past several months, terrible tech. Audio freezes multiple times per story/session, huge distraction that undoes the purpose and benefits of the app. Not acceptable, especially for paid subscribers! Also now will not update or install. Very disappointing.
From the details page. “Calm is free to download and use. There are never any ads and some of the programs and features are free forever.” This used to be true but now everything is locked. I loved using the soundscapes but now I have no choice but to remove as I can no longer use.
App not for me. Been trying to cancel for past hour +, but Play Store will not let me cancel subscription as promised in app page. If I can’t cancel before my free trial ends, I will be charged $70 for a year long subscription. What a great way to generate a revenue stream! Sell an app. Tell customer they can cancel without penalty if done by a certain date, then disallow it. SCAM!!
I was suggesting this app by my therapist, I don’t sleep well at all it’s helpful to have music or sounds in the background to have something other than the ceiling to fouces on it helps make sure if I am going to have sleep paralysis I can listen to something which is why I use Spotify so I have music. This is a good app for people who don’t use/like Spotify or don’t like using songs with lots of words to help you fall asleep. I for sure was a little disappointed because it didn’t play with it.
I love the Calm app. I have been using it for years. BUT some things that need to be fixed are the random notifications that won’t go away without “force stop” when you haven’t even opened the app in days. Also, when I turn on Bluetooth in my car, the app starts playing music without me having the app open. I can’t play Pandora without the music from Calm playing too. I have to “force stop.” I’m going to wreck my car trying to go to settings. Please fix!
I have embraced Calm for over 8 months. I did not subscribe to the premium subscription because it is not within my budget. I only used the app for one sound/song/music. The night stories and other choices looked interesting, it was still this one incredibly beautiful sound that was my go-to. I appreciated the app for it. But now, it is locked. After all of this time. They had to lock it. So I would need to pay the yearly premium just to hear this by Kip Mazuy. This is so disappointing.
In theory it’s a great app, but unfortunately it’s attempt at health moderation is completely stifled by expensive subscriptions, processing errors and a faulty user interface. Although the application does incorporate unique features like “soundscapes” or “meditation” guides –as well as others– none of these features allow you to even try them unless of course for the minimum subscription price of $69.99! That’s right, 70 bucks for some stuff you can do for free anyway. 0 stars if I could :).
I love this app. I mostly started using it for sleep, but have found it very useful in stressful and anxious moments. It has a bunch of themes that you can choose from, I personally choose thunderstorm. It plays the theme in the background and has a bunch of different things to help calm your down such as different breathing exercises. While a lot of things are locked, there is a bunch that is unlocked and there are no pop up ads that I’m aware of.
Free? Well that’s a flat out lie! I got all signed up and got the usual ads with free content to subscribe but it was option. I explored the app the best I could and everything had a lock on it saying that I needed to upgrade in order to listen to it. The only free feature was the default cricket noise in the background but Tiktok had drawn me in with the brown noise/green noise lie that’s supposed to help you sleep. When I searched for them, there was nothing for them. All false ads again 😡😡
I couldn’t even get past my set up phase because it kept messing up on the causes of my stress. I would click 1 and 2-4 random choices would highlight and it went to the next screen. When I went back to fix it, the same thing kept happening with different random choices and then going to the next screen. Kinda stressful… Thanks.
I was really learning a lot about reducing anxiety but the app absolutely stopped working. I logged out and tried to log back in. Each time I tried, ( I even filling in my password and info ) it automatically started me as a new user. I love the content. It is amazing. I am bummed about this big loss though. Can’t find again where to call for help.
It’s a amazing app, but can be frustrating when you see the little lock symbol on a lot options in the app. I know you want to make money too..but I wouldn’t pay more then $1/mo for the app. You want to charge me what Netflix does but deliver on a fraction of the content available. I would also love to have a alarm feature that predicts what time I will get up(I see other apps that have the feature) and they are free! The app is well built, but the pricing is way too high in humble opinion.
it’s true, a lot of content seems to be locked. What is available is very helpful for relaxing. I love the scheduling and tracker to see where I’ve been. My only real issue comes from the fee, a $59.99 yearly charge after the first seven days. Now as far as pricing goes, that’s only $5 a month, but my hang up and there reason it got three stars instead of five, is that there are no other billing options for say just a month. My suggestion would be to give a monthly option. Otherwise wonderful.
Like the app but it wakes me up 5 hours later. I’ll set the timer with a sound or music to go to sleep by. Then 5 hours later the app wakes up again with the default sound of crickets! They’re loud enough that it wakes me up. It kind of defeats the point of the app when it wakes you up again doesn’t it? I’ve contacted technical support but they never got back to me. I have the paid version but I won’t renew unless they fix this. I’m afraid to even use it anymore.
The app itself is great, and I especially love the breathing exercises. There are however a ton of options that you can only unlock with purchase which makes it really frustrating to dig through to find the few free options. Using an app meant to calm you down only to find that you have to scroll through 10-12 paid options to get to the few free things just makes me more stressed.
Good content but not a very good app. The home screen content seems random. You would assume that if I’ve been doing a particular mediation course everyday that the next session of that would be there at the top ready to go each day, but it is not present at all and there are other things. You can favorite things, but navigating around the app and searching for stuff is confusing. So far I’ve enjoyed most of what I’ve heard, but the user experience is sub par considering their subscription cost
App stops working while listening to sleep stories. I’ve been a subscriber for quite awhile, for some reason in the last couple months, the app just shuts down while listening to the sleep stories. My internet connection is fine, it’s frustrating when you’re already trying to fall asleep, and you have to restart an app that is supposed to “calm” you.
Hack to get free sounds. As soon as you open the app, click the “x” on the top left of the screen until you hit the homepage. Then click the mountains at the top left. You can choose white-noise music and images for free, without signing up or giving any information. You can set the volume and the play time up to 12 hours. 3 stars because they try to make you pay 70 dollars for the app, and then when you click out of it, they try and offer a 40 dollar deal instead.. total rip off.
Purchased this app year ago believing I’d be able to cancel at anytime by going in Subscriptions on Google Play. Purchased it, I didn’t like it. Went to the place I was instructed to cancel. It most definitely APPEARED TO CANCEL. It did not. Noticed a large withdrawal today for this app which I simply CANNOT AFFORD. Which shouldn’t have happened. Now I cannot figure out how to cancel something that has already been cancelled but really isn’t. Now I get to decide who gets to eat today? Nice! THX!
I enjoy the app but there are a few things that bug me. If I miss a mood check in at my scheduled reminder time there is no way that I can find to check in. And a feature that I wish this app had is a random mindfulness notification. You can set one at a specific time (and only one) but I’d like to get several throughout the day at random times.
You get a FREE subscription if you have Kaiser for health insurance. I like the short 10 minute meditations and stretching as they’re perfect for busy lives. I use the app before and after work. You have the option of longer meditations. It has helped relieve my anxiety making me calmer and more relaxed during the day, helps me get a good and full night’s sleep. The app is beautiful, has soothing sounds, the narrators voices are easy to listen to
Don’t fall for their “Free Trial” Subscription. They won’t send you a reminder email (as promised), and you’ll find it extremely hard to actually cancel this subscription (before they charge your card), on both Google Play or their website. Two thumbs down for a bait and switch technique that shouldn’t be needed if the product was worth it — It’s not. I rate this app at LESS THAN one star (not worth it) —
I love this app! I use it all the time…and i love that it is always here to return to if i forget it for a while. Only thing i would like to see change is the music….idk why there are 5 min segments. I only use the ones that are an hr long because i journal to it. If its gonna be a 5 minute music segment, at least give the option to put it on repeat. Otherwise, this app is amazing and worth every bit if you use the paid version.
Very well-composed app. Excellent for meditation. I love the sleep stories. It would be nice to have some longer ones ( at least an hour ). Also I like the selections of music. The stats help keep me motivated to continue, and I have found it very helpful to relieve stress. The one year subscription for premium is worth it. Update 11/25/19: Still enjoying this app very much. Works smoothly, no freezing. I only wish it would turn itself off at the end of the bedtime story to preserve battery.
Calm app has very good contents. There are so many great meditations to chose from. I especially enjoy the Daily Jay where I pick up little pieces of daily wisdom. However, the app constantly freezes each time I scroll through the meditations or to change my home page background. I followed through their trouble shooting guides to resolve the issue, however, that did not help.
Excellent media, strange implementation. The stories, the meditations, the music, etc. are all great. But I agree with the reviewer that the visual arrangement is a little…busy. Also, I tried playing a 30 min. music selection to go to sleep… it kept going to on to other selections and played for HOURS… it actually woke me up about 5 hours in. I didn’t mean for it to keep playing, but I don’t see a way to make it stop at the end of a selection…the app needs a sleep timer, maybe?
No monthly payment option, only year-long subscriptions. 7 day free trial available, but other users say it is too difficult to cancel before you’re charged. Given that a year subscription is $70, I’m not about to chance it that I’ll be able to cancel in time. The app advertises that it is a free app, but all content is locked behind the pay wall so it is useless without the subscription. Uninstalling.
I have the paid version and will not renew. Pros : beautiful interfaces and contents (images, sounds…etc) Cons: 1-application is way too noisy (even when deactivating notifications). Too much stuff, no hierarchy, it keeps throwing new stuff in your face for you to ‘consume’, where really, the goal is the opposite. 2-navigating the app is a nightmare. So hard to find what I played yesterday. 3- Open end meditation with bell timers is great idea but VERY impractical to use.
It’s been a while since I’ve found the sounds I like that can bring back memories of good times from the past. Love the storms, campfire and crickets. The only thing that would make this app the best, well that would be to give the option of using multiple sounds at once. Ex: Rain, wind and thunder or Campfire and crickets. However… I still love this easy to use app and appreciate the “calm” it allows me to feel to rest well at night. 🙌🍻
I absolutely love this app! Sometime I use it for the sound of rain mixed with my favorite YouTube videos or I’ll listen to the sleep meditations too help me fall asleep. It has even helped me with settling down my anxiety when I feel like I’m about to have an episode. (I don’t say attack because it’s kind of triggering for me.) I also enjoy just listening to the rain sounds while I’m at work and trying to focus, it helps keep me “calm” and keeps me from feeling overwhelmed. A++ from me!
Been a few years since i last downloaded this and it sure has changed for the worst. Before i was happy just picking a scene, some background noise, and some calm music to relax to. But now there really isnt anything you can do that isnt gated behind some purchase. Absolutely every single thing you have to pay for.
Tv commercial said now free. Not from what I’m seeing. $69 for the year and when you back out they try and offer a discount at $49 a year. I’m sorry but this is way too expensive especially on top of all my other subscriptions like music and TV. No such thing as a bad product but price is definitely a issue. Yeah they offer a 7 day free trial but we all know the nightmare behind auto payment that comes along with these free trials. I really think you should honor the tv advertisement.
